Angel Heart (1987)

Louis Cyphre hires a streetwise private eye to track down a missing client of his with an uncollected debt over his head. The search brings him through the dark streets of Harlem in deep into a world of murder, mystery, and black magic in New Orleans, where he finally confronts the elusive Johnny Favorite. Mickey Rourke stars as the crass 1950's detective Harry Angel, with Robert de Niro pulling his strings as the sly and manipulative embodiment of Satan. ANGEL HEART is a very dark film, both in tone and imagery. Parker's reduced color palette, sepia tones, and pulp comic plotting give it a vintage Film Noir look and feel that perfectly captures the period. The dramatic reveal in the end may be easily predictable, but it is the journey getting there that makes it such an enjoyable watch. Rourke provides another winning performance as he takes us along with him in uncovering each new clue and the trail of dismembered bodies, while also confronting his own personal demons. This atmospheric supernatural thriller is sure to please fans of THE NINTH GATE or FALLEN.

Rating: 9/10.

  1. This sounds like a fun film. Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro? Another one I'm not sure how I've missed.

  4. I remember Bill Cosby more or less disowning Lisa Bonet for her graphic sex scene in the uncut version of the movie. This one caused a big stir back then. Cool movie, too. THE BELIEVERS (1987) had a similar flavor.
