American Horror Story: Season 1 (2011)

Prominent psychiatrist Ben Harmon moves his family of three across the country in the hopes of saving his marriage, but something is seriously amiss in the beautiful old estate that they now call home. The odd assortment of patients and neighbors that come to visit seem somehow connected to the location's dark past, while the malevolent forces at work within the home begin to ware away at their very souls. Will Ben and his family have the strength and resilience to overcome the horrors of the Murder House?

AMERICAN HORROR STORY kicks off with a bang in its first season, bringing psychological terror and true horror to the small screen in a very big way. The edgy new series is sexy, stylish, and utterly gruesome, shocking the television audience with its incriminating displays of gory violence and twisted perversion while pushing the limits of acceptability from all sides. Creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk show us what would happen if David Lynch had been asked to direct THE SHINING. The twists and turns are far too numerous to count, with each becoming increasingly more terrifying and genuinely unexpected than the last. AMERICAN HORROR STORY remains very true to its title by intertwining many real-life tragedies in order to create a spooky mythology that is unique to the American experience. These things only made better by the stellar cast and the horrifying halls of the Murder House, which are just dripping with a sinister mood and atmosphere.

Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton star as Ben and Vivien Harmon, who are working to resolve their issues after Ben's sexual indiscretion. We buy in to McDermott's role fully as the determined psychiatrist, though it is easy to see through the lies and deceit hiding beneath his calm demeanor. Connie Britton is strong and empathetic despite her complete distrust for her husband, which makes watching her descent into madness that much more distressing. Taissa Farmiga and Evan Peters always impress as the Harmon's brooding teen daughter, Violet, and her mentally unbalanced boyfriend, Tate. The tragedy of today's disparate youth is played out through their sullen performances, while the characters, themselves, play out many of this season's most intense moments. They might have stolen the show were it not for Jessica Lange's conniving role as Constance, the home's previous owner. Lange drives much of the mystery and suspense as she secretly drives each of the characters to ruin. She is never to be trusted, no matter how noble her intentions may appear. Each of the support cast members serve to strengthen the ensnaring effect that the characters have on our psyche as the tension continues to mount.

Although the season would have been better served without its final episode (having already passed its crux in 'Birth'), AMERICAN HORROR STORY: SEASON 1 is an exemplary example of modern Horror, combining deathly scares with a reality-based character drama that will torment the viewer on both a psychological and emotional level.

Rating: 9/10.

LOS ANGELES, CA - September 30, 2012 - Tommy Cowley (Aneurin Barnard) lives a quiet life in a decaying apartment complex with his highly pregnant wife. The couple is attacked one day by a group of hooded young thugs, and after a shocking act of violence, Tommy is left to raise his newborn daughter alone.

So shaken by the events that he’s developed extreme agoraphobia, Tommy alternates days hiding out indoors in his new flat from imagined threats and intense therapy sessions aimed at bringing him back to normalcy.

When the same hooded gang, seemingly intent on kidnapping his daughter, begins terrorizing his life again, he’s torn between his paralyzing fear and protective parental instinct. With the help of a vigilante priest who has uncovered the genesis of this ruthless, potentially supernatural gang, Tommy must overcome his fears and venture into the heart of the abandoned tower block known as the CITADEL to save his family.

Winner of the Midnighter Audience Award at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, CITADEL brings a fresh take to classic horror by raising the question: How can you protect your family from evil when you’re afraid of everything?

Screamfest Opens with 'The Collection' Oct 12th!

Written and Directed by Marcus Dunstan &
Written By Patrick Melton
Scribes of Saw IV, V, VI

LOS ANGELES, CA September 30, 2012 – Screamfest® kicks off its 12th annual festival on Friday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m. with the opening night horror The Collection, directed by Marcus Dunstan (writer of Saw IV, V, VI and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter). Screamfest®, the preeminent horror festival in the country, and what the LA Weekly calls “the best place to get a jump on tomorrow’s cult hits” presents the festival in Los Angeles on October 12 through October 21 at LA Live Regal Cinemas (1000 West Olympic Blvd., LA, CA).

From the writing-directing team Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Saw IV, V and VI) comes The Collection, a suspense horror film with nonstop thrills at every turn. Directed by Dunstan and starring Josh Stewart (The Dark Knight Rises, The Collector), Emma Fitzpatrick (The Social Network) and Christopher McDonald (“Boardwalk Empire,” Requiem for a Dream), the film centers on a traumatized man forced to help rescue a beautiful woman who has become the latest obsession of a crazed killer who “collects” humans in a booby-trapped house of horrors. Both Dunstan and Melton will be in attendance for the opening night screening as well as cast members Josh Stewart and Emma Fitzpatrick.

When ELENA (Fitzpatrick) is talked into attending an underground rave party with her friends, she finds herself caught in a nightmarish trap where the revelers are mowed, sliced and crushed to death by a macabre series of contraptions operated by a masked psychopath. When the grisly massacre is over, Elena is the only survivor. But before she can escape, she is locked in a trunk and transported to an unknown location.

Fortunately for Elena, one man—ARKIN (Stewart)—knows exactly where she’s headed, having just escaped from there with his life and sanity barely intact. Going back is the last thing on Arkin’s mind, but Elena’s wealthy father (McDonald) hires a crack team of mercenaries to force Arkin to lead them to the killer’s lair. But even these hardened warriors are not prepared for what they encounter: an abandoned hotel-turned-torture-chamber, rigged with deadly traps and filled with mangled corpses. Can Arkin and the team get to Elena before she too becomes part of his gruesome “collection?”

The film is written by Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Saw IV, V, VI, Saw 3D: The Final Chapter) and produced by Liddell Entertainment and Fortress Features. LD Entertainment is releasing The Collection on November 30th.

Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003)

The Creeper is back, and this time he is after a busload of high school students on their way home from the big game! Can the teens outlast the night and force The Creeper back into a forced hibernation? Unfortunately for us, they can, but not before he tears through more than half of their whiny, over-privileged, and utterly annoying friends on the road to nowhere. The main thing this sequel has going for it is the return of Jonathan Breck as the monstrous man-eating Creeper, who adds even more personality and dark comedy to his villainous role. Like in the original, JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 offers a few stylish moments and jolting shocks, but it is riddled with all of the same errors in logic and storytelling as before. Once again, Victor Salva relies on another psychic character to lend some clue as to what is going on, especially to anyone who had missed the first film. At the very least, The Creeper puts an end to the teens' incessant yammering in a number of brutal and bloody ways when he's not ingesting their organs to replace his own.

Rating: 6/10.

Vile (2011)

The clock is ticking as a group of strangers are forced to torture each other in order to release valuable brain chemicals for a secret drug organization to collect before the time runs out in VILE! VILE is less intelligent than SAW, less shocking than RED ROOM, and less entertaining than either. It is the epitome of the "Torture-Porn" genre, a plotless excuse for gore and grotesqueries that never serves to justify its own existence. Sure, there are plenty of stomach-churning moments where teeth are bashed in, finger nails are ripped out, and people are mutilated, but beyond that, the twists are fully expected and the characters never rise above the standard cliches. With a built-in marketplace for this form of exploitation, however, VILE is certain to find its intended audience.

'Deadly Revisions' Wraps Production

It’s a Wrap!
Completes principal photography

Gregory Blair’s mystery/thriller DEADLY REVISIONS—starring international sensation Bill Oberst, Jr.—has officially completed principal photography and is headed for post-production.

LOS ANGELES, CA - September 27, 2012 - The independent feature DEADLY REVISIONS—a twisted tale of terror from PIX/SEE Productions—has completed principal photography.

In DEADLY REVISIONS an amnesiac horror film writer (Bill Oberst Jr.) finds hypnotherapy and nightmares reveal memories that might or might not be real…and that might or might not be deadly. The film’s twisted blend of mystery, psychological thriller and horror is tasty fodder for fans of numerous genres.

“Filming was an amazing experience,” says writer/director Gregory Blair. “The amount of creativity among the cast and crew led to all kinds of surprises and discoveries…all of which are really going to be fun for folks to see in the finished product.”

But each phase of the project has been blessed with success: the screenplay was first a finalist in a past Horror Screenplay Contest; then, the teaser trailer for the film was honored with a screening at the New Media Film Festival earlier this year, thanks in part to the team at

And the cachet doesn’t end there. The cast is led by international sensation Bill Oberst Jr. who was crowned “King of Horror” earlier this year by Erebus Horror and is also the human monster of the recently Emmy Award winning “Take This Lollipop”. Oberst is very familiar with playing monsters and bad guys; with his role as the haunted writer Grafton Torn, Bill gets to play both sides of the fence because he may be a monster and may be a victim. The audience has to try to figure it out.

The film now heads into post-production. During this time, fans can keep posted via the official DEADLY REVISIONS website, Facebook and Twitter. And, if that isn’t enough, fans can claim their own piece of the action: for a few bucks, folks can get their name associated with the film on the official website or on IMDB; they can actually be a producer, get a piece of movie swag—even get invited to the premiere! The DEADLY REVISIONS website is set up to make that happen.

“So join us and be an accessory,” Blair quips. “It’s an opportunity to die for!"

DEADLY REVISIONS is set for a 2013 release. For updates, visit:

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

When it comes to B-Movies from the 1980's, two names stand out above the rest: THE TOXIC AVENGER and 1988's KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE! The Chiodo brothers have created some of the most hilarious yet nevertheless terrifying creations in the Killer Klowns: Bloated, misshapen monstrosities with snarled grins that wrap their victims in cotton candy cocoons before sucking them dry! Their Acme antics include a ghoulish puppet show, a bloodhound balloon dog chase through the woods, and a ventriloquist's act that makes the town sheriff look like a real dummy, just to name a few. Despite the inherent cheesiness of the plot, KILLER KLOWNS is extremely clever, and frequently parodies the Science Fiction films of the 1950's in high camp. On top of the creepy costumes, the film also features inventive set designs that turn the town and the alien spacecraft into a frightening funhouse of ghastly horrors. Even with the silly slapstick and asinine characters, this cult-classic is enough to give anyone a bad case of coulrophobia.

Screamfest Announces Line-Up for 2012

LA's Premiere Horror Film Festival
Announces First Wave of Gory Good Titles

HOLLYWOOD, CA - September 22, 2012 – Screamfest®, the preeminent horror festival in the country, and what the LA Weekly calls “the best place to get a jump on tomorrow’s cult hits” kicks off its 12th annual event in Los Angeles on October 12 through October 21 at LA Live Regal Cinemas (1000 W. Olympic Blvd. LA, CA). This year’s films include Morgan O’Neill’s THE FACTORY starring John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter and Mae Whitman.

First Wave Title Highlights at Screamfest 2012 (more titles to be added shortly):

· The Factory (US) – Directed by Morgan O’Neill, starring John Cusack (1408, The Raven) and Jennifer Carpenter (“Dexter,” Quarantine and The Exorcism Of Emily Rose) and Mae Whitman (“Parenthood,” “Arrested Development”). Present. Buffalo. The unforgiving winter. A killer roams the streets, abducting women on cold, quiet nights. All prostitutes, missing persons with no one to miss them. He leaves behind no traces, no clues; nothing. Detective Mike Fletcher (John Cusack) is the one cop on the force bent on bringing him to justice. Mike sees the tragedy in all of this: that these poor women are alone in life, and in death. They have no one to stand up for them – no one except him.

· On-Air (Germany) World Premiere - A man (Markus Knuefken) runs a pirate radio station “Nighthawk“ from the basement of his house. Every Saturday night he goes “On Air” as Doc Rock. One night, a serial killer called “The Night-Slasher” (Charles Rettinghaus) calls the show, and Doc has to stop him from killing his next victim. The struggle for survival is ON…AIR.

· True Love – (Italy) US Premiere - On the surface, Kate and Jack are happy. But like everyone, they carry secrets that neither is prepared to reveal. After their wedding, they awake from a deep sleep, each alone in a sealed room with no doors or windows - only images projected on the walls and a monitor with two buttons: a "yes" and a "no.” As the horror of their situation unfolds, surveillance films showing their life together appear on the wall, while the monitor starts asking terrifying questions. It soon becomes apparent that a bizarre test of their relationship is underway, and the secrets revealed lead them deeper and deeper into what could not just destroy their love, but threaten their lives.

· Would You Rather – (US) starring Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), Brittany Snow (Prom Night), Eddie Steeples (“My Name Is Earl,” I Know Who Killed Me). Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman agrees to compete in a deadly game of "Would You Rather," hosted by a sadistic aristocrat.

· Fear of Water (Canada) – Rosalie Richard is found savagely raped and murdered at the foot of a cliff in the Magdalen Islands. The sordid crime wreaks havoc on the quiet life of Sergeant André Surprenant of the local Sûreté du Québec detachment. While the shy Surprenant starts the hunt for the killer, his life is in shambles as his marriage is crumbling, his teenage daughter rejects him, his psychologist is trying to help him overcome his phobias, and the Sûreté is trying to push him aside by bringing in another officer to lead the investigation.

· Resolution (US) – Michael is committed to getting his best friend Chris to sober up and put his life back on track. But what begins as an attempt to save his friend’s life quickly takes an unexpected turn as the two friends confront personal demons, the consequences of past actions, and forces beyond their control. Expertly balancing dark humor, heart, and thrills, Resolution is an utterly unique cinematic experience that defies genre classification.

· Thale (Norway) – Two crime scene cleaners discover a mythical tailed, female creature in a concealed cellar. She never utters a word, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together - she’s been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface. “A rare thing, at times haunting, atmospheric, hilarious, violent and wholly beautiful.” - Badass Digest

· American Mary (Canada) – The story follows medical student, Mary Mason, as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the surgical world she once admired. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries, which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called 'freakish' clientele.

· Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal - (Canada) - Lars Olafssen, once a young celebrity in the art world, is slipping away fast into the land of has-beens. His long-time art dealer, Ronny, is now an ungracefully aging hipster who desperately wants his meal ticket back. But Lars refuses to paint. His creativity comes at too high a cost - his inspiration is carnage - blood, guts and limbs. Not surprisingly, this lead to a dreadful breakdown in the past. Nevertheless, an eager Ronny arranges a teaching job for Lars at an art school in a small Canadian town in the middle of nowhere. It's a "therapeutic" measure for Lars - a means to conquer his need to paint in the "safety" of a country retreat... That is, until Eddie comes into his life.

· Crawlspace - (Australia) From producers of Wolf Creek and Red Hill. A group of elite soldiers infiltrate Australia's top secret underground military compound. They quickly discover all is not as it seems and the facility is a testing ground for something far more sinister.

“Screamfest features the best of young, innovative and up-and-coming artists in the cinema of fantasy and horror,” says Director Wes Craven (the Scream franchise, A Nightmare On Elm Street). “It scares me, and I’m Wes Craven!”

End of Days (1999)

The devil has returned to Earth to claim his bride and bring about the end of the world, and only one man has the power to stop him in END OF DAYS! END OF DAYS feels like a dumbed down version of ROSEMARY'S BABY or THE OMEN, an opportunistic attempt to cash-in on the turn of the century paranoia that tries to mask its failing script behind big names and explosive special effects. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a parody of his former self, having been given more of the worst one-liners of his entire career as he makes a fool of himself on-screen. It is ever-apparent that he is reading the role off of the page, making it impossible for the audience to invest in his character. Gabriel Byrne, on the other hand, gives an entertaining performance as the devil. He is cunning and manipulative, but playful at the same time, recalling Robert de Niro in ANGEL HEART. It is worth watching for his part, alone. Peter Hyams' over-budgeted action sequences turn what probably should have been an atmospheric thriller into a flashy light show with no character or mood to show for it. If anything, the title most accurately describes the shape of Arnold's career as we entered the 21st century.

Rating: 6/10.

Take a Peak in 'The Aztec Box'... Trailer Debuts Online

Fans Are Dared To Open

Official trailer debut on YouTube and Social Media

FULLERTON, CA - September 20, 2012 - "The Aztec Box" has wrapped principal shooting and is currently in post-production, and slated for release in 2013. Check out the terrifying new trailer below:

"In the spring of 2012, four University of Riverside students disappeared while filming a home made reality show. Authorities have determined that the students unearthed an ancient Aztec sarcophagus that caused a number of unexplained disturbances in the weeks leading up to students’ disappearance. The Aztec Box is a MOVIE composed from a collection of footage recovered by authorities from the Riverside, California house where students lived."

Unfolding in an exciting found-footage style, the film is about four ordinary college students come in contact with an ancient Aztec relic, which, it turns out, had been used in human sacrifice rituals more than 500 years ago. The film is centered around the mysteries of the Aztec civilization and uses quite a few historical references as the story unfolds. The Aztecs are specifically relevant in 2012 - it is widely known that the Aztec Calendar ends in December 2012, however, the reason for this is unknown.

'Besties' World Premiere at Fantastic Fest This Saturday

Rebecca Perry Cutter’s
World Premiere September 22nd at Fantastic Fest

Official Selection will compete at the September Festival
At the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, TX

LOS ANGELES, CA - September 20, 2012 – Fantastic Fest announced that director Rebecca Perry Cutter’s debut suspense thriller BESTIES will have its World Premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest 2012 on Saturday, September 22nd at 12:15pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, TX, and again on Monday, September 24th at 3:00pm. The film stars Madison Riley (GROWN UPS, FIRED UP), Olivia Crocicchia (RESCUE ME, TERRI), Corin Nemac (PARKER LEWIS CAN’T LOSE, STARGATE-SG1), and Christopher Backus (ELEVATOR, YELLOW ROCK), and was produced by Linda L. Miller (SWEET TALK, ALYCE), associate producer Tiffany Grant, and Katherine Hoagland executive producing. Feliks Parnell (WEEDS, CSI:NY, THE EVENT) served as Director of Photography.

Fantastic Fest is the largest film festival in the U.S., specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and “just plain fantastic movies from all around the world.” It is held each year in various venues in Austin, TX, but primarily at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema which was dubbed “the best cinema in America” by Entertainment Weekly. The annual film festival is an eight-day event full of independent films, a variety of unique special events for genre film enthusiasts and a one-of-a-kind experience in the capital city of Texas, no doubt a favorite hotspot amongst the independent film community. This year the festival runs from September 20th-27th.

BESTIES tells the story of two high school girls – Sandy (Olivia Croicchia), a high school freshman and self-described loser and Ashley, a sexy senior and Sandy’s former babysitter. Sandy, hoping to forge a friendship with the most popular girl in school, arranges to be left at home under Ashley’s supervision while her father (Corin Nemec) goes out of town. Little did Sandy know that an unexpected visitor from Ashley’s past will leave the awkward freshman and her idol tangled up in a manipulative and deadly friendship.

“I only vaguely remember my first babysitter,” said director Rebecca Perry Cutter. “I don’t remember her name, but I remember that I loved her desperately, with equal parts want and wanting-to-be. That is the dynamic that inspired BESTIES. The movie is about the heady and confusing nature of the girl crush: the passionate idolization that even a straight girl like me can feel for another girl. This passion is at the heart of the relationship between the two leads, Sandy and Ashley.”

Dark Regions Press Releases 'Notes from the Shadow City'

Critics Rave Over

A dark new collection
by Gary William Crawford and Bruce Boston

LOS ANGELES, CA - September 19, 2012 - Dark Regions Press welcomes home a chilling new release by critcally-acclaimed authors and artists Gary William Crawford and Bruce Boston.

“In Notes from the Shadow City, Crawford and Boston distill a bleak dystopian vision. Alone or together, and utilizing poetry, prose, and photographic images, they have crafted a guidebook, a Baedeker to the same outliers as chronicled by Dostoyevsky, Kafka, and Orwell, where shadows are more real than the gnomons that cast them, and the predominant colors come from the stripped-down underside of the rainbow.”
—Robert Borski, author of Blood Wallah and Other Poems

“Like grim guides of the underworld, Boston and Crawford lead you into a terrifying landscape of tragedy and tyranny. At times morbid, despairing, inspiring, and hauntingly beautiful, the Shadow City etches itself into your mind with lonely, tormented characters and their tragic fates.”
—Anders Monsen, Editor, Prometheus

“Boston’s and Crawford’s voices meld beautifully to create dark music. Notes from the Shadow City will echo in your nightmares.”
—Linda D. Addison, Bram-Stoker-Award-winning author of Being Full of Light, Insubstantial

“To say that reading Notes from the Shadow City is a delight might be misleading; to say that it is unsettling, disconcerting, provocative, and remarkable is to scratch the surface of the shadows and begin to reveal the genius beneath.”
—from the introduction by Michael R. Collings, author of The House beyond the Hill

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

The Horror landscape had shifted by 1986. Hollywood had taken over once again, and the Slasher reigned supreme. With the sequels stacking up each summer, it was only a matter of time before TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE would bring Leatherface back to the silver screen. After several duds and much controversy, Tobe Hooper makes a twisted return to the series that made him a star, but in a complete departure from his first film.

In the years since the original massacre, the police have been unable to find and stop the elusive cannibal family that is terrorizing the Texas highway. A rouge detective sets out on his own quest for revenge with the help of a local radio personality when the trail of bodies leads them to an abandoned amusement park. As it turns out, the Sawyer clan has been operating their own restaurant of sorts, selling human meat as the prime ingredient in their prize-winning chili!

Hooper moves away from the gritty realism of guerrilla filmmaking and embraces the big-budget production in every way, from the family's massive underground lair to the gruesome splatter by special effects master Tom Savini. Any seriousness left over from the original is stripped bare as Hooper pushes the dark humor to the extreme. If the first CHAIN SAW questions the grisly effects of American capitalism, the second answers them with blood! After being overtaken by machinery, the Sawyer family has gone into business for themselves, and begin making a killing off of the fat of the land. After all, it's the American way! This is the ultimate irony that Tobe Hooper looks to convey, and what makes TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 such a fun flick.

The sexually-charged exchanges between Caroline Williams' Stretch and a repressed Leatherface are as sick as they are wildly entertaining. Bill Johnson steps in for Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface, and brings his own playful personality to the role. Johnson attempts to seduce Williams with his huge... saw, then courts her by dressing her in his favorite faces and dancing around with her in the meat locker. It is vulgar and obscene, and we love it. Jim Siedow is more deranged than ever as family patriarch (and head chef) Drayton Sawyer. His garbled speeches about making it big in the meat industry always draw a laugh. Finally, Bill Moseley joins the cast as the albino Vietnam vet Chop Top, who may somehow be even more insane than his twin brother (the Hitchhiker from the original). Moseley's wild, erratic behavior and backwards phrasing makes him one of the most memorable characters in the series.

Although the dramatic shift in tone over the original can be confusing at first, it quickly becomes clear that Tobe Hooper is playing with his audience once more by perverting the American dream. This is the best of the sequels from the original series.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Terror found a new face with the release of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, a face sewn of human flesh! As a progenitor to the Slasher era, TEXAS CHAIN SAW is one of the first films to feature a masked madman that murders teens with a variety of deadly weapons. It is set in an isolated location far removed from the safety of home, and includes a lone surviving female protagonist, or "final girl," that defeats the villains and escapes the madness. These common tropes would dominate the 1980's, but they had yet to find a home in Horror cinema by 1974.

In THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, Sally Hardesty and her friends head out to a remote cemetery to check on her grandfather's grave after hearing reports of vandalism and grave robbery that had been occurring across the state. While there, they decide to visit the old family farmhouse, but soon run out of gas. As Sally, Jerry, and Franklin have fun exploring the house, Kirk and Pam head over to a nearby neighbors to borrow fuel. Kirk knocks and enters, but is hit over the head and dragged inside by the hulking cannibal known as Leatherface! Pam follows, and is snatched up and skewered on a meat hook. Confused by the intrusion, Leatherface grabs his chain saw and takes off after the remaining teens to ensure that no one discovers his house of horrors hidden off of the Texas highway.

With TEXAS CHAIN SAW, director Tobe Hooper launches an all-out attack against the viewer that doesn't stop until the credits role. From its earliest moments, the audience is assaulted with horrifying images of death and destruction, but unlike so many other films of its kind, CHAIN SAW goes sparingly on the bloodshed and instead focuses on intense moments of implied violence that shock and upheave. Hooper also strays from convention by setting the majority film in the daylight, building his mood and atmosphere around the natural Texas landscape. As if Gunnar Hansen's imposing figure weren't enough to terrify audiences, the use of sound elevates the tension and unease to a level beyond compare. The high-pitched whine of the camera during the opening scene, the jagged whir of the chain saw, the clatter of bones, and Sally's maddening screams at the dinner table... Each of these push the viewer past the edge of sanity. We have reached the place of nightmares, and it is in our own backyard!

Like in EASY RIDER before it, CHAIN SAW marks the end of an era for the hippie movement, while showing firsthand the harsh social and political climate of post-Vietnam America. Hooper has created the blackest of all comedies, drawing a sadistic humor out of the depraved scenes of torture. Here, we have the American family turned upside down; men whose moral base has shifted as a means of survival after they are forced out of their jobs. American industry has chewed them up and spit them out, and now they are left to pick the carcasses of unsuspecting travelers. They react to Sally's cries with mocking laughter as they try to help good old grandpa crack a hammer against her skull. We laugh as well, to rid ourselves of fear.

The production design and art direction of Robert A. Burns are unmatched in any other film of its kind. Once Tobe Hooper invites us into the Sawyer home, it is up to Burns to sell it, and he does with a disturbing display of death and decay. Each room is littered with the remains of countless dead animals, and furniture has been designed from human skin and skeletal remains. This is Hell on the highway, a house of horrors that has been taken straight from the history books. Stories of the Butcher of Plainfield, Ed Gein, come to life before our very eyes as Hooper sets his own family of cannibals loose on the world.

It is easy to look back and laugh at the amateur acting from several of the teen characters, particularly with Paul Partain playing Sally's annoying brother Franklin, but they are at least more likeable than many of the teens to come in the countless imitators that drowned out the 80's. Marilyn Burns, however, is unforgettable as Sally. Her screams will forever haunt anyone who has seen the film. All we can see is the frantic look of horror and despair in her eyes as she sits strapped to the dinner table. Hooper captures this moment perfectly in a tight zoom. We are scared, but we cannot look away.

The Sawyer family is also expertly cast, each bringing with them their own form of crazy. Jim Siedow's sadistic father character "can't take no pleasure in killing," but he sure doesn't mind beating his victims with a broom or chasing after those old sons of his. Edwin Neal is purely psychotic as the Hitchhiker, putting the audience in an instant state of unease from the moment he boards the van. He is rash, unpredictable, and insane. The utmost of praise is always held for Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface, however. Hansen's choice to play the character as mentally deficient gives his role an entirely new meaning. There is no malice behind his actions, he is simply in the business of collecting meat, and business is good. Leatherface appears to be more surprised than his victims when the teenagers just start popping out all over the place, and he takes care of them the only way he knows how: with the saw.

TEXAS CHAIN SAW remains one of the most influential and utterly terrifying films ever created, and its legacy continues to grow with each passing decade. While the sequels, remakes, and prequels keep the legend of Leatherface alive, nothing can ever top the original nightmare.

'Wake in Fright' Returns to Theaters This October

“Powerful, Genuinely Shocking & Rather Amazing!”
-Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times

“The Best & Most Terrifying Film About Australia In Existence.”
-Nick Cave

Ted Kotcheff's award-winning film to make its US debut
At The Film Forum (NYC) October 5

NEW YORK, NY - September 18, 2012 - Alongside Mad Max and Walkabout, Wake In Fright is widely acknowledged as one of the seminal films in the development of modern Australian cinema. Combining the backwoods horror of Deliverance and the gritty nihilism of Straw Dogs, the film tells the story of a British schoolteacher's (Gary Bond) descent into personal demoralization at the hands of drunken, deranged derelicts (including a very inebriated "doctor" played by Donald Pleasence), while stranded in a small town in outback Australia.

The film made its world premiere at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival where it was nominated for a Palme D'Or and its US distribution rights were sold. Retitled Outback and hurried into a few theaters across the country, the film barely played for more than a week before it was yanked from circulation due to poor attendance and lack of advertising. Wake In Fright vanished into obscurity, barely reviewed by American critics and not ever appearing on domestic VHS or DVD.

For over three decades the film materials were thought to be lost until the film's persistent cinematographer unearthed the original negative elements in Philadelphia in canisters marked for destruction just one week away from its impending incineration. The materials were painstakingly restored frame-by-frame at Sydney's At Lab Deluxe with the support of the National Film And Sound Archive of Australia. The new restoration was invited back to Cannes by guest curator Martin Scorsese, where it held the honor of being one of two films to ever screen twice at the festival (the other being Antonioni's L'Avventura).

Virtually unseen in the US and renowned in its home country after years of neglect for its daring criticism, Wake In Fright is ripe for rediscovery, and returns after 40 years to reclaim its title as one of the most awe-inspiring, brutal and stunning films of all time.

Wake in Fright is the story of John Grant (Gary Bond), a bonded teacher who arrives in the rough Australian outback mining town of Bundanyabba, planning to stay overnight before catching the plane to Sydney. But, as his one night stretches to five, he plunges headlong toward his own destruction. When the alcohol-induced mist lifts, the educated John Grant is no more. Instead there is a self-loathing man in a desolate wasteland, dirty, red-eyed, sitting against a tree and looking at a rifle with one bullet left.

Jeepers Creepers (2001)

"You know the part in scary movies when somebody does something really stupid, and everybody hates them for it? This is it." Trish and Darry are stalked by a terrifying man-eating creature while on their way home for spring break in 2001's JEEPERS CREEPERS! Victor Salva directs from his own original screenplay, which is lazy, messy, and misguided from the very start. JEEPERS CREEPERS opens as a suspenseful thriller, before revealing that the killer creature is actually rooted in the supernatural. Whenever the action lulls or our interest in the characters begins to fade, Salva throws in some desperate new gimmick to try and gain back his lost momentum without ever actually attempting to improve upon the story itself. The creature goes from being an axe-wielding maniac to being a cannibalistic ghoul to then tranforming into a cannibalistic ghoul with wings and mandibles which serve no other purpose than to show off the flashy special effects. At one point, Salva writes himself into a corner when attempting to explain the creature's origin or why it only eats certain people and parts of the body, and hence "Jezelle the Psychic" is born out of convenience and necessity. If we are to believe that the creature can only replenish its limbs and vital organs by eating the flesh of its victims, just how is it supposed to grow back those wings, anyway? As annoying as they often can be, Justin Long and Gina Phillips are goofy enough to keep us entertained as the unfortunate brother and sister team, while Jonathan Breck adds a frightening new villain to the modern Slasher genre.

Anchor Bay Acquires Rob Zombie's 'The Lords of Salem'

TORONTO, ON – September 17, 2012 – After much speculation and a heated bidding war, Anchor Bay Films emerged as the new home for Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem. Under the agreement, Anchor Bay will handle all U.S. distribution rights on the film. Written and directed by Rob Zombie, The Lords of Salem stars Sheri Moon Zombie (Halloween) as well as Bruce Davison (X-Men), Jeff Daniel Phillips (Halloween 2), Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead), Patricia Quinn (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Dee Wallace (E.T.) and Judy Geeson (To Sir, With Love). The film premiered last week at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and received rave reviews from mainstream and genre critics alike. Anchor Bay Entertainment President Bill Clark made today’s announcement.

“We’re extremely excited to be working on this film with Rob,” commented Kevin Kasha, Executive Vice President, Acquisitions and Co-Productions. “It’s a perfect fit for Anchor Bay.”

“I have always been a fan of the care and respect Anchor Bay has put into their genre titles,” said Zombie. “I can’t wait to work together to bring this bizarre, special movie to the masses.”

The Los Angeles Times dubbed The Lords of Salem “his darkest most unnerving yet,” IndieWire declared it “Rob Zombie’s best film” and Dread Central said “fans couldn’t stop talking about the film” after its premiere in Toronto.

Rock star-turned-horror maven Rob Zombie conjures up a nerve-wracking chiller involving Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie), a radio station DJ, who receives a wooden box containing a vinyl record, "a gift from the Lords." She assumes it’s from a band trying to promote themselves. Heidi and others listen but unbeknownst to them, the bizarre sounds within the grooves immediately trigger flashbacks of Salem's violent past. Is Heidi going mad or are the Lords of Salem returning for revenge on modern day Salem?

The deal was negotiated by Kevin Kasha, Marc Barson and Josh Thomashow for Anchor Bay Films and by Josh Braun of Submarine and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones for Alliance Films. Alliance Films financed the film which was produced by Andy Gould, Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider. Kavanaugh-Jones is the executive producer.

Night Train (2009)

A mysterious box filled with priceless jewels drives two passengers and the conductor of the night train to commit unimaginable acts of evil in the 2009 thriller NIGHT TRAIN! Brian King surprises in his directorial debut, producing one shockingly unexpected twist after another as the three characters are destroyed by greed and paranoia. Tension runs high as more suspicious passengers and policemen hop on board along the way, but no one can anticipate how this one will end! Danny Glover outshines the rest of the cast as the unresolved train conductor, torn between his heartfelt sense of morality and the chance to save his dying wife. Steve Zahn may be passable in his role, but Leelee Sobieski severely detracts from the realness of the situation with her dry, staged performance. Other than that, NIGHT TRAIN is a fun and fast-paced thriller that will surely appeal to the Coen brothers crowd.

Night Shadow (1989)

Alex returns home for some rest and relaxation, only to find that her small town has fallen victim to a series of brutal slayings at the hands of a mysterious stranger... Randolph Cohlan's first and only film is as horribly made as it is unintentionally hilarious. What little plotting that exists sets the film up as a murder mystery, but there is little suspense when the killer is revealed in the opening scenes. The audience also knows from the start that the killer is a werewolf, yet we are dragged along as the police fumble through each murder scene only to come to the same conclusion an hour later. NIGHT SHADOW is poorly scripted, and reads like a endless string of awful one-liners spouted out by a young Kato Kaelin and Stuart Quan. The creature effects and gore are satisfactory for the budget, but no excuse can be found for the jokey performances or talentless production.

Freestyle Releasing Unleashes the 'Jinn'

Accurate Ancient Mythological Folklore to be Introduced to
North American Audiences for the First Time

LOS ANGELES, CA - September 15, 2012 - Freestyle Releasing has acquired the domestic theatrical rights to JINN, a tension filled supernatural thriller from Detroit-based Exxodus Pictures. The film, written and directed by Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad, was produced by Ahmad and Benjamin Dresser, and stars Ray Park ("Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace"), Faran Tahir ("Iron Man", "Star Trek"), William Atherton ("Die Hard", "Ghostbusters"), Serinda Swan (A & E's "Breakout Kings"), and Dominic Rains ("Flight 93"). Richard Mandell, Najam Syed and Shahid Syed executive produced the film for Exxodus. A release date for the film will be announced in the forthcoming weeks.

The amazing story of JINN involves ancient mythological creatures who have never been seen in U.S. cinemas before. The premise of the jinn concept, known to over 1 billion people around the world, involves supernatural entities and revolves around creation mythology: In the beginning, three were created; man made of clay; angels made of light; and a third...made of fire. They are powerful due to their existence in a parallel world, and also because they have free will and can be both good and evil.

The film has already generated a lot of early attention online, as the teaser trailer and links to other related material have generated over 2.5 million combined hits. JINN is also unique in that the hero vehicle used in the film, known as the "Firebreather," was designed by the director and is the first vehicle in motion picture history available to the public for purchase. The "Firebreather" is a V8, 618 horsepower super exotic American muscle car with 50 limited editions being produced as the exact replica of the vehicle in the film. The car, several of which have already been sold, was designed by Exxodus Pictures to honor the Detroit automotive industry by creating a modern vehicle with the soul of classic American muscle.

The distribution deal was negotiated by Freestyle's Co-President Mark Borde, Head of Acquisitions Chris Charalambous and Richard Mandell and Najam Syed from Exxodus Pictures.

"The Exxodus team and I are very excited to be working with Freestyle Releasing on the film, especially with their experience and delivery model. They understand the originality of the jinn concept and its franchise potential, and will definitely market the concept to North American movie going audiences while retaining its authenticity to people already familiar with the idea," said Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad.

"We are happy to be distributing a film that will introduce North American audiences to an entirely new, entirely different supernatural concept, and I know that our team is excited to get this movie out to the public," said Freestyle's Borde.

Freestyle Releasing is responsible for distributing some of the most successful independent films, including THE ILLUSIONIST, THE HAUNTING OF MOLLY HARTLEY and AN AMERICAN HAUNTING. Freestyle's recent slate of releases includes the critically-acclaimed Filipino horror-thriller THE ROAD from director Yam Laranas, along with TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN directed by Stuart Beattie, which also marked the first feature film to debut digitally on Facebook. Upcoming theatrical titles for Freestyle include YOU MAY NOT KISS THE BRIDE starring Katharine McPhee and Rob Schneider.

KatieBird *Certifiable Crazy Person (2005)

KatieBird is your just your average everyday serial killer, as her psychologist soon finds out while delving deep into her demented past! Justin Paul Ritter's directorial debut shows no shortage in style or ambition, although it is severely lacking in character, mood, and in the overall performances. Ritter immediately jumps in to a split-screen format that he will use throughout the duration of the film, but De Palma he is not. The technique is never properly applied to better our understanding of the characters or to tell a multi-layered story. Instead, it is mainly used to show the same repeated action from multiple perspectives. This would make sense if KatieBird were, perhaps, schizophrenic? The panels only serves as an ongoing distraction, and frequently remind the viewer that they are watching a movie. Ritter's attempt to create a serious character drama is foiled by his two lead actresses, playing the older and younger versions of KatieBird. Helene Udy and Taylor M. Dooley are impossible to believe in the role, and make it difficult not to laugh at their quirky, over-the-top performances. The basic premise and groundwork in KATIEBIRD could have served as a functional serial killer picture had Ritter taken a much more subtle approach, but there is far too much working against the film to make it enjoyable on any level.

A simple cross-country trip turns into a fierce battle for survival when a group of desert vampires set their sights and Sean and his new traveling companion in THE FORSAKEN. THE FORSAKEN borrows generously from films like NEAR DARK and John Carpenter's VAMPIRES, only to come off feeling unoriginal and uninspired. We spend the majority of our time with our hero Sean (Kerr Smith), who spends the entire time worrying about his car and making it to his sister's wedding despite the unholy terrors that are unfolding around him. Johnathon Schaech serves as a decent villain, but his vampire cohorts range from being minor annoyances to complete distractions. Phina Oruche's ungodly performance, in particular, detracts from everything else that is occurring on screen. The action and horror are both bland and predictable, and although the plot introduces some interesting new ideas to the vampire mythos, it frequently contradicts itself. If we are to believe that vampirism is a virus, why would killing the head vampire cure anyone that has been bitten? Overall, THE FORSAKEN is familiar and bloody enough to earn a passing grade for vampire fans.

Rating: 6/10.

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

In this dark re-telling of the classic fairy tale, Snow White escapes the grasps of the evil Queen Ravenna after her father's kingdom is thwarted, and it will be up to the young Princess who is pure of heart to amass the forces of good against her wicked stepmother. Or so it would seem... It is difficult to tell exactly what is going on throughout the threadbare plot in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN. Sure, it looks pretty, but the big-budget special effects cannot hide the fact that SNOW WHITE makes very few attempts at telling a compelling story. Kristen Stewart stars as our slack-jawed and angst-ridden heroine (if you can call her that). Snow White spends the majority of the film fleeing through the woods with the aid of The Hunstman (Chris Hemsworth), before suddenly and confusingly becoming the leader of a major rebellion against The Queen. The term 'contrived' receives a whole new meaning in the film's brisk 2-hour run time. Charlize Theron is given a few moments to shine as Ravenna, but if any praise is due at all, it must be given to the set designers, who have brilliantly dressed everything from the brooding castles to the enchanted forests. SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN provides enough eye-candy to 'wow' most fantasy fans, but THE LORD OF THE RINGS this is not.

The Victim (2011)

Annie lands on Kyle's front porch deep within the woods after being chased by two murderous cops, but as each of their stories begin to change, it will be left up to Kyle to determine the real victim... Genre favorite Michael Biehn stars as our crowbar-wielding hero in THE VICTIM, his second outing as both writer and director. Unfortunately, the audience is the one true victim in all of this. THE VICTIM is a mess from the very beginning. The poorly scripted characters and dialog are far from believable, faults that become that much more apparent throughout the grossly overacted performances. When the awkward sex scenes and confusing flashbacks are also taken in to account, it becomes increasingly difficult to remain involved in the plot. The end credits only seem to confirm the cast and crew's half-serious tone, but this isn't clear at any other point in the film. While Biehn and Blanc show a definite appreciation for the genre, this creative team will require much more outside experience to shore up many of the flaws in production.

Rating: 5/10.
