Chainsaw Sally (2004)

A new developer hopes to turn a sleepy lakeside town into an upscale community, but a local legend is about to hack their plans in to pieces! Librarian by day, murderous madwoman by night, Chainsaw Sally sets out to stop the greedy corporation from corrupting their quaint little town and taking over her family's estate. April Monique Burril stars as the sexy new Slasher icon from 2004's underground indie hit, CHAINSAW SALLY! Like HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS before it, CHAINSAW SALLY is a self-proclaimed schlockfest from start to finish, and revels in its own B-movie madness. Burril feels much more at home as the darkly-clad heroine, where she really lets loose and has a ton of fun with the character along with her crazed brother Ruby (Alec Joseph). It's only when she is forced to put on an act as the town's quiet librarian that her performance really falls apart and becomes forced. Writer/Director Jimmyo Burril (husband to April Monique) draws on many of the classics for inspiration, paying particular homage to the Tobe Hooper film while including cameos by genre greats Gunnar Hansen and Herschell Gordon Lewis. While the no-budget production often reflects a fanboy approach to filmmaking, CHAINSAW SALLY is a bloody good time for B-movie Horror fans.

Mark and Jerry return to the Horror Movie Podcast with Episode #110, featuring Man of Steel, Byzantium and 2 Gorean flicks!

Look! Up in the sky! It’s Henry Cavill on wires!

Hello to all the ships at sea & all the ships in drydock from your friendly friends at The Horror Movie Show. Though one of our hospitable hosts has a headcold, good ol’ Mark & Jerry are more than happy to cough up their thoughts on the latest Superman incarnation in Man of Steel. True, some have suggested this movie should have been titled Man of Aluminum (“It’s… weak & dull”), but let’s leave it to our hosts to spit out their opinions.

Also on deck: Byzantium, a fresh take on bloodsucking babes. Directed by Neil Jordan, starring Saoirse Ronan & Gemma Atherton, this is a wild ride well worth taking.

Next, Jerry & Mark discuss yet another in a long line of mediocrities from the desperate goobers at Syfy. The man with the giant pearly-whites, Erik Estrada, stars in Chupacabra Vs. the Alamo. What could be more terrifying than a huge pack of Mexican monsters? Well… Erik Estrada, for one. Best thing about this flick was getting to see the legendary basement of the Alamo.

Finally, this episode of your favourite horror podcast includes a review of not one, but two Korean hits: Oldboy & I Saw the Devil. Thanks to our loyal listeners for suggesting these tasty, raw Asian delicacies.

So pull up a piece of floor, cross your legs & dig into the kimchi. This is one spicy episode!

New crime novel rewrites werewolf myth, makes them more like wild wolf packs

SWINDON, GB - June 30, 2013 - Author Susan Rae Glass explores the world of werewolves in her new supernatural crime thriller, “Claws and Robbers” (published by AuthorHouse. Set in Hounslow, a borough of West London next to Heathrow Airport, “Claws and Robbers” tells the story of a typical police response team starting out on what they think will be a normal night shift. When a man’s body is discovered in an alley ripped to pieces, officer Lauren Wylie and her teammates realize that their night is far from ordinary, and it’s about to go from bad to worse.

Lauren and her colleagues begin to dig deeper into the investigation, and more bodies are discovered. The murders are committed by a pack of werewolves. There are two packs; the rogues responsible for the killings and the real wolves, a society hiding in plain sight with jobs and lives that appear normal. However, these creatures have an exclusive membership and set of values apart from the real world.

“In other supernatural books, the werewolf is usually a slave to vampires or reclusive or not united,” Glass writes. “My werewolves have been based on how a wolf pack in the wild works, and I have not paid attention to how they have been written in other similar genre books.”

Thrilling New Trailer Debuts for 'Rigor Mortis'

A New Horror Film in the Classic Hong Kong Tradition

HONG KONG - June 30, 2013 - Fortissimo Films announced that it has acquired all international rights outside Hong Kong & China to RIGOR MORTIS, the highly anticipated, feature directorial debut of Hong Kong actor/singer/writer Juno Mak (REVENGE A LOVE STORY). Now in post-production, the film draws its roots from the very popular Chinese vampire (Geung Si) movies of the 1970’s and 80’s and charts new ground as it delivers up a contemporary story combing cutting edge special effects with a world of thrills, suspense, ghosts, traditional mythology, action and horror. Staring one of the original vampire hunters, action star Chin Siu-ho (FIST OF LEGEND, TAI-CHI MASTER), the film was produced by acclaimed Japanese director Takashi Shimizu (JU-ON, THE GRUDGE) along with Juno Mak and his Kudos Films:

RIGOR MORTIS reunites many of the surviving, original cast members of the Geung Si genre, evoking nostalgia in an imaginative modern vision. It is something Mak describes as “A Nightmare Poetry” taking inspiration from the now cult films including the MR VAMPIRE series of the mid to late 1980’s. The story is set in a modern day housing estate and revolves around Chin Siu-Ho, playing himself as a down and out actor/vampire hunter who moves into a rundown public housing flat only to discover that his apartment is haunted and he is not alone. In order to survive he must do battle with the forces of evil.

The deal was done by Fortissimo Chairman Michael J. Werner and writer-director-producer Juno Mak together with the Distribution and Marketing Manager of Kudos Films, Sindy Lam. The film will receive an international festival launch later this year followed by its Hong Kong theatrical launch.

On making the announcement Werner commented, “RIGOR MORTIS has landed itself squarely in one of those cool genres with so much worldwide commercial potential. Juno brings a fresh, young and visionary perspective which will appeal to both young audiences discovering the genre for the first time and older audiences who remember the truly original films of the 70’s and 80’s.”

Juno Mak added, “The Geung Si movies have fascinated me ever since I was a kid. They prey on our fears and our dark side, yet they also have a humanity to them. The film is a return to the genre, with a fresh approach for a brand new audience and I have no doubt fans of the old movies will love it too. I am thrilled to be working with the Fortissimo team to bring my debut feature RIGOR MORTIS to the world.”

Synopsis: In this eerie and chilling, contemporary, action/special effects laden homage to the classic Chinese vampire movies of the 1980’s, writer-director-producer, Juno Mak makes his feature directorial debut. Co-produced by J-Horror icon Takashi Shimizu, and reuniting some of the original cast members of the classic MR VAMPIRE series, RIGOR MORTIS is set in a creepy and moody Hong Kong public housing tower whose occupants we soon discover, run the gamut from the living to the dead, to the undead, along with ghosts, vampires and zombies.

RIGOR MORTIS stars action movie veteran Chin Siu-ho (Siu-ho) as a former vampire hunting actor who now finds himself reaching the end of the line as a washed-up star, separated from his wife and alienated from his son. Down on his luck and with barely a dollar to his name, he checks into room 2442 in the housing estate, an allegedly haunted flat. His aim is to end his misery by doing himself in, but instead Siu-ho is interrupted by some of the other “occupants” of the building including a Taoist master-exorcist (Anthony Chan), a traumatized housewife with a tragic past (Kara Hui), as well as a seemingly benign elderly woman (Paw Hee-ching) who has an empty coffin conspicuously hanging in the middle of her apartment.

Soon it becomes apparent to Siu-ho that the people around him and the situation are far from normal. Despite his lack of belief in superstition, Siu-ho is soon thrust into the battle of his life as vicious vampires with unsettled business begin to rise from the dead…

Pinocchio's Revenge (1996)

After her client is sentenced to death for the murder of his son and several other children, defense attorney Jennifer Garrick returns home to find that a key piece of evidence, has found its way in to her possession. Her daughter immediately becomes attached to the hand-carved wooden puppet of Pinocchio, but it isn't long before mysterious accidents begin to plague Jennifer and her daughter, Zoe, as well! PINOCCHIO'S REVENGE would be another disposable piece of Slasher garbage if it weren't for the ongoing sense of mystery behind the murders. Writer and director Kevin Tenney deliberately keeps the killer concealed until the final moments of the film, and even then, we are still left to wonder whether Pinocchio has truly come to life, or whether some evil spirit has possessed poor Zoe. That being said, the acting is simply atrocious, and the production lacks any sense of style, whatsoever. At least the Pinocchio puppet is mildly creepy in and of itself, but the murders are dull and uninspired. PINOCCHIO'S REVENGE is better left to Horror fans with an acute sense of Pediophobia, because CHILD'S PLAY this certainly is not.

Sinister (2012)

Ethan Hawke stars as a struggling author who moves his wife and children in to the home of a recently murdered family in the hopes of uncovering some sort of missing evidence for his new crime novel. What he finds hidden in the attic during his research will not only chill him to the bone, but will place his entire family in the hands of a sadistic serial killer! Director Scott Derrickson takes a stab at the supernatural thriller in 2012's SINISTER, although he only achieves moderate success due to several unfortunate decisions in the film's final act. SINISTER opens with a chilling mystery as Ellison Oswalt (Hawke) uncovers a box filled with home movies that portray the grisly deaths of several families at the hands of an unseen killer. These nerve-wracking scenes would be entirely unbearable if it weren't for a few timely edits that save us from utter despair just as the most disturbing images are about to be displayed. The sound design is incredibly grotesque and unsettling, as well, and is responsible for a number of well-earned scares. Derrickson, who offered us the respectably-reserved THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE back in 2005, then goes on to destroy all of the film's credibility by revealing the supernatural elements to the audience. This leaves us with a devastating sense of disappointment after such a powerful build, and cheapens the scares in SINISTER severely. What is left over can most easily be compared to the other ghostly let-downs found in INSIDIOUS and DEAD SILENCE. SINISTER is worth a few good scares, but ultimately fails in the end.

The Dead Zone (1983)

Johnny Smith awakens from a coma to find that he now possesses the gift of second sight, which allows him to look into someone's past or future after making contact with that person. His newfound ability comes at a terrible cost, however, as he is forced to intervene in a number of world-changing events if he hopes to save an ill-fated future. THE DEAD ZONE is a slight departure from Cronenberg's typical canon of work, which usually involves some form of physical deformity that has resulted from man's tampering with nature. Here, we have a much more cerebral suspense thriller that feels like a Philip K. Dick novel set in modern times, although the story, itself, has been adapted from the works of Stephen King. Cronenberg brings an unmistakable sense of style to the piece, particularly throughout Johnny's psychic flashbacks. THE DEAD ZONE is best remembered for the outstanding performances from both Christopher Walken as Johnny Smith and the wildly-eccentric Martin Sheen in the role of aspiring senator Greg Stillson. Sheen steals every scene, and becomes a much-hated villain by the film's climactic finale. The ongoing themes of isolation and loneliness that occur in spite of Johnny's great power also contribute to the darkening mood. THE DEAD ZONE is a minor classic from the early 1980s that is well worth revisiting.

DeepStar Six (1989)

Director Sean S. Cunningham cashes in on the popular ALIEN trend in 1989's DEEPSTAR SIX, an underwater adventure film that also bears a suspicious similarity to the George P. Cosmatos film, LEVIATHAN, from the same year. The crewmen of the DeepStar diving vessel incur the wrath of a vicious deep sea predator after awakening it during an underwater excavation. Those left standing must find a way to destroy the beast while awaiting clearance to return to the surface. Unfortunately, the real action doesn't get underway until well past the halfway mark, but once the creature is finally revealed, it is easy to understand why. Lewis Abernathy's script is filled with dull cliches and transparent characters that hardly work to captivate the audience's attention. They are met with a number of equally-lame special effects and third-rate performances to make for an all-around bore of a film that pales in comparison to both LEVIATHAN and THE ABYSS. Cunningham can't help but to sneak in another cheap scare tactic in the final scene to remind us that he first made FRIDAY THE 13TH. DEEPSTAR SIX is beyond salvage, and better left rotting beneath the sea.

Welsh Mum Becomes Movie Scream Queen

Welsh Mum
Becomes Movie Scream Queen

WALES, GB - June 24, 2013 - A Welsh actress and mum has been busy making horror movies in her spare time, and now she's the focus of a lot of media attention.

Melanie Denholme, 33, loves to act and landed a role in a British Hammer style movie. One thing led to another and this year she has three films coming out through US film companies and is busy answering questions in interviews with horror magazines and radio shows across the world.

Her latest horror film is called Sucubi and is a very racey and bizarre film that saw Melanie having to kill man after man. She admits that doesn't come naturally to her, but the producers have been so impressed that she's been asked back for more and more lead roles.

“I’ve had to do all kinds of things. Strip naked, sit in baths full of blood and guts, lie dead in the freezing sea with nothing on, kill lots of people, suck blood and yet, I’ve had the time of my life and hope it can continue.” Said Melanie.

Next step for Melanie? She wants to land a lead role or two in something that doesn't always involve biting heads off. But before that, she’s in pre-production on a British alien sci-fi movie set for international release in 2014.

Melanie's portfolio can be found at:

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

A defunct police station falls under siege by a powerful gang in John Carpenter's cult-classic, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13! Austin Stoker stars as the unfortunate Lieutenant Ethan Bishop, whose first day on the job after a new promotion lands him right in the middle of a fire battle. Stoker's calm, cool demeanor in the midst of the surrounding chaos positions him as an instant action icon in his single most powerful performance. The remaining cast, including Darwin Joston as Napoleon Wilson, Laurie Zimmer as Leigh, and Tony Burton as Wells, also help to bring out the natural sense of realism throughout the picture. This is pushed even further by the documentary-type filming, which creates a continuing sense of panic and urgency along with the synthesized score. Although Carpenter has cited George A. Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and the Howard Hawks classic, RIO BRAVO, as his main sources of inspiration, the bloodied assault on the police station often recalls Sam Peckinpah's STRAW DOGS as well, given the explosive gore and exploitative action. ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 would become a sleeper hit in the years following its initial release, while leaving a lasting impression on the action genre that continues to be seen today.

Robert Z'Dar to Star in New Slasher 'Easter Sunday'

Iconic actor Robert Z'Dar
Set to Appear in Slasher Throwback

Currently in Production in Virginia

LOS ANGELES, CA - June 21, 2013 - It seems every holiday was used as the backdrop for an '80s slasher movie - with the exception of Easter... until now! Northgate Pictures is currently in production in Virginia on Easter Sunday. The gritty throwback to the golden era of slasher films is based on an urban legend about an axe-wielding killer who wears a rabbit costume.

Easter Sunday is written and directed by Jeremy Morehead, an exciting new filmmaker with a lifelong passion for horror. Genre fans will recognize iconic actor Robert Z'Dar (Maniac Cop, Tango & Cash) as the film's Sheriff Arkin and indie regular Edward X. Young (Mr. Hush, Sea of Dust) as demonologist Angus Bradley. The cast also includes Jeremy Morehead, Valerie Foos, Jon McCoy, Anne Morehead, Travis Morton and Jason Delgado.

Easter Sunday aims to return to the slasher genre's roots by relying on tension, suspense, camerawork, character development and black humor, rather than quick editing and jump scares. "I feel like a lot of horror films being released these days don't have the heart and soul that the genre films from the '80s had," explains Morehead. "Our goal is to create a film that pays homage to all the films that made us horror fanatics."

It's been 24 years since the deranged serial killer Douglas Fisher was executed by police on Easter night. This year, a group of hard partying teenagers not only raise some hell, but literally raise the dead! The teens accidentally conjure the spirit of Douglas Fisher... aka the bunny masked killer. These teens have until midnight on Easter to stop the evil bunny slasher, or he will tear their town and everyone in it into pieces. There will be no candy in your Easter basket, just the limbs and body parts of your family and friends:

The Witch Who Came from the Sea (1976)

Molly is slowly driven mad by the guilt and shame that she experienced as a child under her abusive father. Delusion gives way to murder as she becomes increasingly detached from reality in the 1976 shocker, THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA. While a few select scenes depict Molly's grisly daydreams of bodily dismemberment, THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA earned itself a place on the "Video Nasties" list in Britain due to the graphic and daring portrayals of incest and child abuse that were displayed on screen, rather than the usual sex and gore. Millie Perkins delivers a noteworthy performance as the disturbed young woman, and frequently loses herself in the character as she gives in fully to the madness. Although the film reaches for a deeper meaning through its condemning imagery, Molly's violent outbursts and projections are often misdirected, and fail to drive a stinging blow against the proper offenders. THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA does benefit greatly from Dean Cundey's key cinematography, and will likely appeal to fans of Brian De Palma and other psychological Horror films.

In theaters and Video on Demand Friday, June 28th!

LOS ANGELES, CA - June 19, 2013 - In 100 BLOODY ACRES, brothers Reg and Lindsay Morgan are struggling to keep their organic blood and bone fertilizer business in motion. Their secret “recipe” for success (using dead car crash victims in their product) was a huge boon to business, but lately supply has been gravely low. Months have passed since their last find, and an important new customer is now waiting on a delivery. When junior partner Reg (Damon Herriman of Justified) stumbles upon 3 travelers stranded on a remote country road, he cooks up a radical solution to their problem, and a way of finally gaining the respect of his bossy big brother (Angus Sampson). A bloody good time, the Cairnes’ brothers witty horror-comedy blends sly Australian humor, gory fun, and a clever storyline that gives “recycling” a whole new context.

'The Black Waters of Echo's Pond' Hits DVD and Blu-ray This September!

This is a movie for old-school horror fans!”
-- Village Voice

Terror Rises September 10th on
Blu-ray™ and DVD

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - June 19, 2013 - In 1927, archaeologists unearthed a major historical find in Turkey. What happened next is the stuff of legend...and nightmares! Anchor Bay Films presents the September 10th release of The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond on Blu-ray™ and DVD.

Directed by Gabriel Bologna, this journey into unrelenting horror stars scream queen Danielle Harris (Halloween 4 and 5, The Victim, Hatchet II and III), genre favorite Robert Patrick (Terminator 2, Walk the Line, Jayne Mansfield’s Car) and James Duval (Donnie Darko, Independence Day, Gone in Sixty Seconds). SRP is $26.99 for the Blu-ray™, and $22.98 for the DVD. Pre-book is August 14th.

American Mary (2012)

An aspiring surgeon enters the world of underground body modification to help pay her way through medical school, but her strange new obsession turns deadly when she begins to use her talents to exact revenge against those who have harmed her! Jen and Sylvia Soska return with their second highly-acclaimed Horror film entitled AMERICAN MARY, from 2012. Katherine Isabelle is an absolute knock-out as the sinful surgeon, lending a whole new meaning to the phrase "Desperate times call for desperate measures" with her peculiar new career path. MARY is teeming with dark, sadistic humor and sharply-written dialog, each of which are played out perfectly through Isabelle's twisted performance. Todd Masters lends a number of stomach-churning effects to the picture, as well. Although MARY takes us in to daring new territory as we delve in to the rarely-seen world of body modification, its message seems lost somewhere along the way. Having already earned her revenge, Mary's motives become increasingly unclear as she continues on with her bloody business towards no certain end. The film shows a remarkable refinement in style for the sisterly pair in spite of these things, and offers Horror fans a refreshingly original break away from the sequels and remakes that continue to flood the genre.

Now a major Channel 4 series, The Returned arrives on DVD July 22nd, 2013 in the UK courtesy of Arrow Films!

The recently dead return to life and seem content merely to go back to their former lives, but their return causes a myriad of complications. Isham and Véronique have their trepidations, but they're generally happy, at first, to see their little boy Sylvain, and the town's elderly mayor welcomes home his wife, Martha . But Rachel, a government health official, cannot bring herself to visit her newly returned husband, Mathieu, at the ad-hoc shelter where the government houses the "zombies" like refugees. Eventually, she relents, and Mathieu returns home, but the living find that their loved ones are not exactly as they remember them. Studies soon reveal that the dead suffer from a form of aphasia. 'Stoker' Brings You 'The Best On-Screen Lolita Characters'

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment Presents

In Honor of The Dark Beauty, Stoker, Arriving on Blu-ray June 18th!

LOS ANGELES, CA - June 17, 2013 - Academy Award® Winner Nicole Kidman*, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode star in this “darkly wicked, beautifully executed mystery” (Los Angeles Times) by critically acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook (Oldboy).

Following the tragic death of her father on her eighteenth birthday, India Stoker (Wasikowska) meets Charlie (Goode), her charismatic uncle, whom she never knew existed. When Charlie moves in with India and her unstable mother (Kidman), both are drawn to his charming and calming demeanor. But it soon becomes clear that Charlie’s arrival was no coincidence, and that the shocking secrets of his past could affect India’s future...or shatter it completely.

To gear up for the upcoming release of Stoker on Blu-ray and DVD on June 18th – Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has compiled some of the most iconic Lolita- esque characters in recent cinematic history. Who’d be your top pick?

Presented By Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment

The Virgin Suicides – Kirsten Dunst

Part innocent teen, part mysterious seductress, Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal of Lux Lisbon is Sofia Coppola’s directorial debut is all Lolita. At one hand she does fragile teen in the movie so well, writing the name of ‘Trip’ onto her underwear, yet underneath her girly demeanour, a true female seductress lies. She wraps men around her finger, teases, seduces and finally fools her family and the rest of the neighborhood boys into realizing the true extent of their tragic plans.

American Beauty – Mena Suvari

American Beauty tells the story of a suburban father (Kevin Spacey) who snaps when he becomes disgusted with his stale, repetitive existence. He quits his job and begins a regression into young adulthood, lifting weights, smoking pot, doing nothing, and discovering the overflowing sexuality of his 16-year-old daughter's best friend, Angela (Mena Suvari). Like the film itself, Mena’s performance is at first dark, somewhat comic, clichéd yet intelligent, scandalous, emotional, and without question one of the most seductive teenage performances of all time.

Taxi Driver – Jodie Foster

Jodie Foster made a huge impact in her performance for Martin Scorsese's iconic Taxi Driver (1976). Playing opposite the equally mesmerising Robert De Niro, the film really hit its stride when Foster’s 12-year-old child prostitute, Iris, steps into Bickle’s cab in an attempt to escape her pimp (Harvey Keitel). It’s no real surprise that Foster was great, as this was already her 33rd role as an actress. At only age 14, she already had more performances than some have in their entire careers.

The astonishing thing at play in her scenes is not even that she holds her own with a titan like De Niro, but that she truly carries herself like a grown up, someone who has lived twice the life of any girl her age. This is not a child actress acting adult-like in an amusing way, but a child conveying the utter loss of childhood. A true Lolita.

Stoker – Mia Wasikowska

In Stoker, Mia Wasikowska plays India, an introspective, peculiar, solitary girl who mourns the recent death of her father whilst being constantly at odds with her mother. She finds herself attracted to her mysterious Uncle Charlie who comes to live with them, following the funeral.

Taking on the role of Lolita, the pair engages in a seductive piano-playing sequence alongside a shower scene that somewhat recalls that scene in Psycho, Wasikowska’s character discovers herself in the shower after witnessing her Uncle dispose of her lecherous classmate. The incestuous relationship between niece and uncle in the film provides much of the picture’s sense of unease, as India becomes more and more drawn to her charismatic relative.

Lolita – Sue Lyon

The film, that started it all. "How could they make a movie out of Lolita?" screamed the print ads to Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 movie. By changing the 12-year-old object of Humbert's lust into a 15-year-old, that's how. Selected to portray Vladimir Nabokov's celebrated nymphet was Sue Lyon, who was 14 when she won the role. The original novel caused no end of scandal by detailing the romance between a middle-aged intellectual and a 12-year-old nymphet.

Lolita is the object of Humbert's love, a young girl who epitomizes the seductive qualities of the nymphet. Though she seems to like Humbert at first, over time she grows irritated with him and defies his authority. Beautiful, she is also vulgar, crude, and attached to popular culture.

Kick Ass – Chloë Moretz

When Kick-Ass was released in April 2010, everybody left the theater thinking about Hit Girl. Maybe it is a testament to the character and not the performance, but the two should go hand-in-hand. The unbelievable charisma of Chloë Moretz was unmatched by any other actor in the film. And we’re talking about a girl who went toe-to-toe with Nicolas Cage and Mark Strong.

Instead of resorting to the obvious and ultimately awkward sex appeal of a female hero, Moretz went with a mysterious badass persona. Hit Girl is the reason Kick-Ass lives up to its name. The other characters and the movie’s style are enjoyable on multiple levels, but without Moretz’s turn as Hit Girl the film just doesn’t have the electricity it needed. She left the humor up to her Big Daddy (Nic Cage) and kept a straight face the whole way.

Moretz is definitely a force to be reckoned with, reminding us of a young Jodie Foster without the overwhelming sexuality. Moretz was fun to watch in (500) Days of Summer and was even more graceful in Let Me In. However. Hit Girl was her coming-out character and the world will be able to recognize her because of an off-the-charts charisma that no other female youngster can match today.

Leon: The Professional – Natalie Portman

Most of the performances on this list excel because of the maturity of each youngster’s character. Sometimes a role is written that way, while others are the work of a dedicated child actor. Portman’s work in The Professional (a.k.a. Leon) is both.

As the film progresses, her balance of vengeance and progressive maturity is fascinating to watch. The fact she is now in the hands of a quasi-mentally-challenged hired assassin makes her resurgence as a lost soul even more powerful. It truly is all the work of Portman, though; she knew her character backwards and forwards, giving her a realistic quality that bleeds through the screen.

Her face contorts with every emotion, her lust for revenge comes through with an unsuspecting humor and her sex appeal is as uncomfortable as it is realistic. She just fits so snug into this character of Mathilda that it’s hard to tell if she is even acting at times – but there is no doubt she portrayed a character that has experienced something way beyond Portman’s real life.
