The Night Flier (1997)

A bloody trail of bodies has left the police stumped as the murderer travels from airport to airport in his mysterious black plane. Tabloid reporter Richard Dees is hot on his trail, however, and will stop at nothing until he has discovered the truth behind The Night Flier! Miguel Ferrer stars as the crass and cutthroat reporter, Richard Dees, in another playfully over-the-top performance that lends a villainous creed to his character. Although we do not encounter the toothy Dwight Renfield in his full form until the final scenes, we are privileged enough to see the results of his insatiable bloodlust in a gory spectacle of ghoulish delight all throughout the film. The KNB team outdoes themselves once again with a number of impressive effects for this low-budget sleeper, including a surprisingly original design for the film's fanged villain. There is little mystery or suspense to be found in the plot, itself, but Ferrer carries the film with fiery performance, alone. THE NIGHT FLIER is a cheesy popcorn flick at best, but it is an enjoyable one, nonetheless.

Rating: 6/10.

Lord of Tears (2013)

James Findlay returns to his childhood home deep within the Scottish Highlands to seek out an answer to his waking dreams and nightmares, but what he will discover is far more horrific than he could have ever imagined! The legend of the Owlman comes screeching back to life in Lawrie Brewster's chilling supernatural thriller, LORD OF TEARS. From its earliest moments, LORD OF TEARS immerses us in a rich and haunting atmosphere that is teeming with suspense. The gloomy aesthetic and oppressive mood each present an uncanny resemblance to the traditional Horror films of the region, recalling similar works by the Hammer greats Terence Fisher and John Gilling. Writer Sarah Daly lends a unique mythology to the picture as she lets loose the Owlman against our unsuspecting protagonist, although he may find more to fear within his own shrouded memories than in the beast's mighty talons. While Brewster's visual palette continues to impress from start to finish, his timely approach to storytelling may leave many viewers bored to tears. The film's development comes at a slow and deliberate pace, a fact that will be appreciated by Horror classicists, but which may not appeal to many modern filmgoers. Once the Owlman cometh, however, all will fall prey to his terrifying gaze. LORD OF TEARS will certainly find its audience in fans of THE WICKER MAN, WAKE WOOD, THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, and THE PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES.

Rating: 7/10.

'Muck' Brings Back Old School Horror!

Stars Horror Legend Kane Hodder and the 2012 Playboy Playmate of the Year

LOS ANGELES, CA - October 27, 2013 - Following up on its teaser trailer that generated over 30 articles in the horror community and earned the only horror film panel at Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo 2013, WithanO Productions just released the theatrical trailer for its upcoming "Muck" film. "Muck" stars the horror legend Kane Hodder ("Friday the 13th" 7-10, "Hatchet" trilogy) and the new Scream Queen, 2012 Playboy Playmate of the Year, Jaclyn Swedberg. The trailer provides a more in-depth look at the film below:

"Muck" was filmed completely on the Red Epic in Ultra HD over the course of 19 grueling all-night shoots. Shot entirely on location in the swamps and marshes of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, this dangerous shoot was nearly impossible when you factor in first-time director Steve Wolsh produced “Muck” on a mirco-budget of $200,000.

Although an independent feature, "Muck" matches the quality of any top Hollywood film. By using the industry's preferred 4K HD camera, "Muck" images surpassed larger budget indie films even before DaVinci color correction. For the record, the Red cameras used weren’t “stolen”, just "borrowed without asking" and returned with minimal water damage. Moreover, after Universal Studios viewed the first cut of the film, the powerhouse agreed to mix "Muck" for theatre surround sound on the Universal lot.

The “Muck” production did not make it easy on the actors, though. SAG expressed concern during production of this film, stating, “‘Muck’ is, without a doubt, one of the top 5 most violent scripts we have ever seen come through.” With concern from SAG, horror fans can rejoice about stunts in the upcoming film: in-water fighting, full-body fire burns, high-impact falls, and even a naked woman thrown through glass. All without any use of CGI.

Besides the Horror Legend and Playmate of the Year, "Muck" features an amazing cast of up-and-coming actors, led by Australian hunk Lachlan Buchanan ("Newcastle", "Pretty Little Liars", and "NCIS: Red") and Indian beauty Puja Mohindra. Very few Hollywood films feature strong lead roles for Indian actresses, and this is a first for any American horror film, a breakout role for Mohindra.

'The Winedancers' Enters Production in France

France Gets a Taste of
A Suspenseful Murder Mystery from Director Gary Meyer!

LOS ANGELES, CA - October 27, 2013 - For the past five weeks, the South of France have been the host of a cast and crew shooting a new horror film entitled "The Winedancers". Written and directed by Gary Meyer while produced under the helm of Godam Film, the film is about a number of groups of people coming together and meeting up, in what to begin with looks very coincidentally, at a winecheateu in the South of France. Needless to say, it won't take long until a lot of very peculiar incidents start taking place; odd Pagan rituals, chateau hosts very far from the ordinary, people slowly going off the deep end one by one - and most importantly: bloody murder - VERY bloody murder, in fact! Plus, it offers real suspense that can almost be described as a classic game of whodunit with a lot of twists and turns!

The cast is very international, UK actors Lucinda Rhodes, Edmund Digby-Jones, Kyle Calderwood and Marina De Salis, Scandinavian actor Kim Sønderholm, Mexican actors Mariana Peñalva and J.C. Montes-Roldan, Polish actress Kasia Koleczek, French actors Miglen Mirtchev, Antoine Martin, Andrea Catozzi (an acrobat able to do the craziest thing with this body) and the towering Jonathan Christopher Duncan playing “Gimp”. Finally, ofcourse there is “Fashion One Correspondents” model Callie Roberts.

Director, writer and producer Gary Meyer about the film:
"It all started in my back garden, I was working with a friend of mine who was into films so that's all we talked about. I wanted to write something new, raw and keep it that way not allowing it to be changed by outside influences and pressures to make it the same as everything else out there.

A mixture of horror comedy and theatre, a roller coaster of emotions. For some reason I came up with a transvestite cowboy line dancer as the main character wearing stiletto heals and tapping to the beat of “Cotton-Eye Joe”. To this day I'm entirely sure where that idea came from. Then after some brain storming and getting some work on a vineyard “The Winedancers” was born. The inspiration: Robin Hardy's “The Wicker Man”, Tony Scott's “The Hunger” and life here in Provence with its deep routed French way of life resisting change as much as it can from the outside world. The wine, the vineyards and the Pagan-like festivals which are held in the small surrounding villages during the summer.

Oh yes I almost forgot, and the French love of dancing...... line dancing, it seems inherent. It is so beautiful here that one can only get inspired but just below the surface of this beauty lies greed, corruption and the unseeing innocent victims who are lured here by its magic, its a magnet for it. “The Winedancers” is this story hosted by the greek gods Pan and Bacchus and not to mention a glass or two of wine."

The film is currently being edited and the release is expected for 2014, but until then, read more about “The Winedancers” on the IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3167458

Fade to Black (1980)

Eric's obsession with movies takes a deadly turn after he decides that he has suffered his final abuses from his friends and co-workers. With some quick make-up and costuming, Eric transforms himself into Dracula, Hopalong Cassidy, The Mummy, and other silver screen idols as he sets off into the night to seek his revenge! This relatively obscure and largely forgotten Horror film hit during the height of the Slasher cycle, yet it offers something new to the genre entirely. Eric is played by the sheepish Dennis Christopher, who is not just your typical nerd. Despite being constantly picked on by his peers, Eric maintains a high sense of self-esteem, and even has the guts to ask out his favorite lady, who bears an incredible similarity to Marilyn Monroe. It is only due to a series of unfortunate circumstances that Eric finally snaps and lashes out against his aggressors. Like TERROR TRAIN, FADE TO BLACK is mostly bloodless, and instead focuses on Eric's descent into madness rather than the exploitation of nudity and gore. Writer/Director Vernon Zimmerman leaves no room for subtlety in his frequent homages to both the Horror genre and film at large, but the clever allusions to WHITE HEAT and KISS OF DEATH are sure to be appreciated by movie buffs. Christopher is enjoyable in each of his many impressions, and successfully manages to draw from the audience's sympathies. FADE TO BLACK will hold a certain appeal for the fans of early 80's Slashers, and ranks right alongside NIGHT WARNING and CURTAINS as one of the more underappreciated films in the subgenre.

Rating: 7/10.

An Isolated Seaside Town Spirals Into Madness As A Mysterious Infestation Grows

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - October 22, 2013 - VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in North America, has announced the release of the UZUMAKI Deluxe Edition. The new 3-in-1 hardcover version of creator Junji Ito’s inventive horror manga (graphic novel) about the gradual decent into madness of a seaside town overrun with spirals features a new cover design as well as 12 pages of new full-color interior artwork.

The UZUMAKI Deluxe Edition, now available is published under the VIZ Signature imprint, is rated ‘T+’ for Older Teens, and carries an MSRP of $27.99 U.S. / $32.00 CAN.

Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in everything from seashells and whirlpools in water to the spiral marks on people's bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi's father and the voice from the cochlea in our inner ear. The Razor Reel Fantastic Film Festival
Launches a First for Belgium with its Opening Film

BRUGES, BE - October 22, 2013 - On Thursday 24 October 2013, the Razor Reel Fantastic Film Festival opens its doors with the Dutch thriller “App” (Bobby Boermans, 2013). By doing this, Razor Reel launches a first for Belgium, because “App” is the first thriller for cinemas with a revolutionary second screen application. Visitors are required to download the second screen application in advance on www.appdefilm.nl, on their smartphone or tablet and get to see additional information during the film (additional scenes, video, pictures and sound), that adds to the storyline and expands it. As a viewer, it will be surprising to experience how two storylines on the movie screen and the smartphone or tablet come together naturally!

Even without second screen, “App” is definitely worth watching! It’s a superintense contemporary thriller that tells the story of the modest and intelligent 21-year-old student Anna, that, after a dramatic traffic accident in which her younger brother has become partially paralyzed, immerges herself completely into her virtual world. She’s addicted to apps, social media and her smartphone.

After a wild party, of which she remember very little, Anna discovers that that night, a stranger has installed a strange app, called IRIS, that has an answer to all her questions. To her amazement, the smart and practical app knows the answer to not only scientific and historical questions, but also to questions that refer to her personal life and that of friends. When she receives cryptic texts and codes through the sharp app, that are related to the sudden and enigmatic death of people from her surroundings, she slowly comes to the realization that IRIS is more than a practical app.

With “App”, Razor Reel hopes to attract attention to a new revolution in the cinema landscape and a new way of watching movies in the future!

'The Bat' Flies Home November 12th!

Film Chest Media Group Proudly Presents

Vincent Price & Agnes Moorehead Lead All-Star Cast in a
’50s Suspense, Cult Classic That Will Keep You Guessing Until the End!

HD Restoration Premieres Oct. 24th on Turner Classic Movies
Flys Onto DVD Nov. 12th

BRIDGEPORT, CT - October 22, 2013 - Mystery, murder and mayhem take flight in The Bat – restored and in HD for the first time ever – debuting on Turner Classic Movies Oct. 24 and DVD Nov. 12 from Film Chest Media Group. Featuring an all-star cast, this suspenseful cult favorite from 1959, will keep you on the edge of your seat!

In The Bat, mystery writer Cornelia van Gorder (Agnes Moorehead, TV’s Bewitched, Hush … Hush, Sweet Charlotte, Citizen Kane) resides in a town terrorized by a mysterious murderer known only as “The Bat,” said to be a man with no face who kills women at night by ripping out their throats with steel claws.

Breaking into Cornelia’s countryside home one night, he releases an actual bat, which bites her maid Lizzy (Lenita Lane, Compliments of the Season, While America Sleeps), sending her into a panic that she has caught “the rabies.” Cornelia calls her doctor, Malcolm Wells (Vincent Price, Edward Scissorhands, House on Haunted Hill, TV’s Batman), who happens to be conducting research on bats.

Little does Cornelia know that the good doctor has an ulterior motive for coming to her assistance—a thief who has stolen $1 million in bank securities has confided in Wells, leading him to believe the stash is hidden within Cornelia’s home. After dispatching with the thief, Wells plots to claim the missing treasure.

When additional break-ins and murders by The Bat continue, local police chief Andy Anderson (Gavin Gordon, Bride of Frankenstein, The Scarlet Empress) comes to the house with suspicions of both Wells and Cornelia’s butler Warner (John Sutton, Jane Eyre, Return of the Fly).

Also featuring Darla Hood (of the Little Rascal’s Our Gang in her final film appearance), The Bat, with its hand-wringing twists and turns, will leave you guessing until the astonishing reveal at the end. A non-stop thriller sure to get your blood pumping!

The Bat, presented in widescreen (16x9) and mono sound, will enjoy a Turner Classic Movies premiere Oct. 24th prior to its DVD release.

American Horror Story: Asylum (2012-2013)

Enter the Briarcliff Asylum, one of the cruelest locations on the face of the earth. Briarcliff is not only home to the deranged and the criminally insane, but also to Sister Jude and her sadistic medical staff. Kit Walker becomes one of their newest residents after being falsely accused for a series of brutal murders, but he is soon joined by the unfortunate Lana Winters, a reporter who is admitted against her will after attempting to expose Briarcliff for all of its corruption. They are not the only ones, however, as an evil presence quickly consumes the dark hallways of the asylum.

American Horror Story continues to break the boundaries of acceptability and moral decency on television with another thrilling season that is sure to shock and disturb its viewers! Asylum goes far beyond even the first season when it comes to explicit sexuality and true terror, bombarding the audience with an onslaught of graphic images and themes from the very first episode on. The addition of Sister Jude's naughty nuns ties in an element of exploitation that seems unacceptable, even for cable. It isn't just the women, however. The despicable Dr. Arden and questionable Dr. Thredson are responsible for some of the most heinous acts ever thought imaginable, reducing the residents of Briarcliff to a subhuman level.

Jessica Lange returns with another powerful performance as Sister Jude, commanding the screen once more just as she had in the previous season. She lends a depth and sincerity to the role, even in its darkest moments. Evan Peters joins her as the pitiable Kit Walker, whose guilt we can never quite establish. Although he is still quite good, he is unable to outdo himself from the first season. Sarah Paulson and James Cromwell each contribute admirable performances, as well, but the highest praise goes to Zachary Quinto and Lily Rabe as Dr. Oliver Thredson and Sister Mary Eunice. The character of Dr. Thredson draws from a variety of notorious names throughout America's dark history, and Quinto's dry, clinical portrayal is nerve-shattering. Lily Rabe is simply fantastic, and is able to play the sweet, innocent Sister Mary Eunice just as well as her demonically-possessed alter-ego. Once again, American Horror Story has found its greatest strength in its key casting.

Briarcliff would not be the dark, menacing beast that it is without its key set decoration, either. After stepping into the asylum, we literally enter the mouth of madness, a dungeon of filth and despair. The chic home of Dr. Thredson creates the perfect dichotomy, and explores the different facets of a broken psyche from each of its many angles. This season would not have achieved the same level of success without the convincing environments in which its characters interact, allowing the actors the sense of sheer insanity that their characters would have experienced.

After an electrifying start, however, Asylum begins to dawdle midseason, before dropping off into a sappy and overly-emotional finale. The story threads that immediately captivated our curiosity in the beginning never come to a satisfying resolve, thereby squandering all of the potential that is set up in the first several episodes. This is the greatest shock and disappointment in the series, which already has a history of ending on a lull after first season. Still, the first half of season two is strong enough to carry audience members through to the end.

Regardless of the change in direction, American Horror Story continues to prove itself as one of the most provocative and terrifying shows on television, and if one thing is certain, it is that audiences are sure to tune into season three.

Rating: 8/10.

What Will Be Uncovered in 'Skendleby'?

Strange Happenings Have Been Reported In

A new novel by Nick Brown

LOS ANGELES, CA - October 17, 2013 - When archaeologists and developers fight over a site of historical interest in a small Northern village, strange and inexplicable things start to happen. 4000 years ago, a small Neolithic tribe travel to an uninhabited region of the Cheshire Plain, now known as Skendleby, and bury alive a possessed young woman in a shamanic ritual. The members of the tribe also sacrifice a young man whose body is left to watch over the burial site and protect it from intrusion.

Claire Vanarvi, a psychic healer in modern day Skendleby, dreams she is in the same tomb where the young girl was buried alive. When Claire awakes she senses something stirring underneath a nearby mound of earth. Instinctively, she knows that whatever it is must never be let out.

Unfortunately, there are several people determined to disturb the ancient burial site; a local property developer hopes to build mansions for the rich and famous on the plot of land, and a group of archaeologists want to excavate it. As both groups come closer to fulfilling their plans, the ghost of ‘the watcher’ starts to make itself known and a series of odd occurrences befall the small village and its meddling residents. When the tomb is eventually opened, an eerie chill suddenly descends upon Skendleby and things start to turn sinister. A group of locals - led by the psychic healer Claire and the agnostic Reverend Joyce - realise there is a link between the disruption of the burial site and the strange goings-on, and attempt to put a stop to it.

Skendleby is written by author and archaeologist Nick Brown whose own experiences inspired the story. Brown’s in-depth knowledge of local history and archaeology, his personal concerns about the over-development of the countryside, and prior episodes of apparent hauntings in his own house, all contribute to make this supernatural tale ring spookily true. Even those who aren’t fans of horror can enjoy this gripping and genuinely creepy story. The novel has echoes of ghost story master M R James, and Brown has succeeded in penning a story which fits the classic mould of such writers whilst remaining thoroughly modern with its somewhat tongue-in-cheek style.

About the author: Nick Brown has an extensive background teaching and writing in the fields of archaeology and ancient history; he taught and studied at both Manchester and Leeds Universities; worked with the Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit on the reconstruction of a Romano-British Villa; and has contributed many articles to academic journals and magazines on the topic of archaeology. Brown also opened and was the Principal of Oldham Sixth Form College and was awarded an OBE for his role in making it one of the most successful in the country. This is Brown’s second novel and is the first in a series of ghost stories set in the fictional northern town of Skendleby. Skendleby by Nick Brown (published by New Generation, RRP $13.99 paperback, $7.99 eBook) is available online at retailers including Amazon.com and can be ordered from all good book stores. More information can be found at the author’s website: www.nickbrownbooks.com.

The Cabining (2013)

Todd and Bruce head out to a cabin in the woods in the hopes of finding the inspiration for their newest Horror movie, but unfortunately for them, it comes in the form of a sadistic serial killer who is looking to turn their screenplay into a terrifying reality! Deconstructionist Horror comes home once more in THE CABINING, another clever satire on the standards of the genre that packs in more than its fair share of laughs along the way. Mike and Steve Kopera bring us an entertaining and understated comedy filled with enjoyable characters and many bloody murders. Like in TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL, the characters in THE CABINING stand aloof as the horror unfolds around them. Mike stars alongside Bo Keister as the two failing screenwriters who share an instant rapport on screen. Luce Rains delivers another hilarious performance as Jasper, their deranged housemate. The Koperas do a fine job keeping us in suspense leading up to the inevitable plot twist, which they pull off with a great deal of success. THE CABINING provides plenty of good fun for Slasher fans, and stands up against the more mainstream efforts like THE CABIN IN THE WOODS.

Rating: 7/10.

The Dead (2010)

The dead have risen in Africa, leaving few left standing in their wake. That is, with the exception of two soldiers, one African and one American, who struggle to survive only in the hopes that their families might still be alive in some far-off place beyond the desert sands. The Ford Brothers have the potential to become this generation's Fulci and Lenzi, stepping out into the genre with what is sure to become a cult zombie sensation! THE DEAD not only offers extreme gore, but extremely realistic gore, and in all of the most unexpected ways. Unlike the new DAWN OF THE DEAD or 28 DAYS LATER, these are your granddaddy's zombies. Stiff. Slow-moving. And most of all, DEAD, not infected. The film has a crisp documentary look and feel, and the safety of daylight no longer applies when the majority of the events occur under the blistering African sun. For everything it lacks in story, it more than makes up for with its somber mood and chilling atmosphere. Although they exchange relatively little dialog, Murphy and Dembele share a genuine rapport, and are very likable heroes. Prince David Oseia gives a particularly devastating performance as he looks out at the lifeless bodies of his people, strewn across the African plains like so much garbage. THE DEAD can be read as a tragic allegory of the current AIDS epidemic in Africa, with the United States being both the first to arrive with aid and the first to bail out when the situation became uncontrollable, leaving the rest to die. A notable entry in the ongoing chronicles of the undead.

Rating: 8/10.

Indiecan Entertainment to Debut 'Solo' in Canada

Indiecan Entertainment Acquires

A Thrilling New Film By Director Isaac Cravit

TORONTO, ON - October 12, 2013 - Indiecan Entertainment has acquired the Canadian distribution rights to Isaac Cravit’s debut feature length thriller Solo. In ‘Solo’, a tense psychological thriller, Annie Clark (Degrassi) plays a teenage girl who is terrorized when she spends two nights alone on a remote island as part of her camp counsellor initiation.

Solo is written and directed by Isaac Cravit and produced by Chris Bennett and Robert Budreau for Lumanity Productions.

LA-based Continental Media acquired worldwide rights ahead of Cannes and sold the US to The Orchard, who are partnering with horror specialist Shock Till You Drop on a late October release.

Solo was produced by Lumanity Productions in association with Gyro Park Productions and Vigilante Productions and executive produced by Jacob Cohen, Dan Shimmerman, Mark Gingras, John Laing, and Tom Bjelic. Production partners included The Movie Network and Movie Central.

Solo stars Annie Clark (Degrassi: The Next Generation), Daniel Kash (Aliens, Momma), Richard Clarkin (Goon), Steven Love, and Alyssa Capriotti. The film was beautifully shot outside of Toronto and in Algonquin Park by Stephen Chung and edited by Adam Locke-Norton, with original composition by Todor Kobakov.

Solo has recently received great reception from audiences at the Montreal World Film Festival, Edmonton International Film Festival, and will play at renowned genre fest Toronto After Dark on October 21st.

"Solo grew out of a story I heard from a friend around a fire one night. A girl she knew at summer camp returned from an uneventful overnight by herself (a “solo”), and a week later had her pictures from the trip developed. As she thumbed through them, she came across pictures she didn’t remember taking, strange ones, like pictures of her tent, her clothing, her tampons. Eventually she reached a picture she knew she didn’t take: A picture of herself asleep in her tent. Around the fire, we were all noticeably disturbed and uncomfortable. I was inspired. This was a story I wanted to know more about. Who’s this girl? Who’s taking pictures of her? What physical and psychological toll does being alone in the wilderness take on a seventeen-year-old girl? That was the spark that started me writing,” says Isaac Cravit.

“When I started Indiecan Entertainment a couple of years ago Robert Bubreau approached me to see if I would be interested in distributing Solo. I really loved the script and the vision the filmmakers had in the making of the film. After seeing the final product I was excited to get behind the film. I am really looking forward to rolling the film out with the Solo team in early 2014,” says Indiecan’s Avi Federgreen.

“With Avi and Indiecan, we will get a real grass-roots and social-media focused approach to the release of Solo to reach the dedicated fans of Annie Clark and the same die hard audiences who attend the sell-out Toronto After Dark Festival” says producers Chris Bennett and Robert Budreau.
