Eyes Without a Face (1960)

A brilliant surgeon attempts to restore his daughter to her former beauty after a terrible car crash leaves her permanently disfigured. Using an experimental skin grafting procedure, Doctor Génessier comes closer and closer to achieving this goal, but modern medicine would never approve of his methods... Georges Franju's French classic ushers in a new era of surgical horror that would bleed in to the B-movie cinema of the 1960's and 70's in films like DR. BLOOD's COFFIN or Jess Franco's THE AWFUL DR. ORLOF. Where these later entries would exploit the theme for all of its gory potential, Franju focuses on the pathos of a character-driven drama that is riddled with grief, remorse, obsession, and despair. Questions of morality and ethics constantly plague the characters as the lines of right and wrong are blurred. We can never be certain whether Doctor Génessier continues his efforts out of the love and guilt that he feels for his daughter, or if it is the obsession with his own success that secretly drives him. We also find that the cost of vanity is eally quite deep, not just for the doctor and his daughter Christiane, but also for his victims. Many of these characters would choose death over disfigurement, devaluing a life lived without beauty. The elegant cinematography disarms the audience when it comes time to perform the surgeries, since the scenes are shot with such clinical precision and convincing special effects as to completely uphold the suspension of disbelief in a thrilling display of the Grand Guignol. Pierre Brasseur provides a flawless performance as Doctor Génessier, however it is Edith Scob who we truly identify with as Christiane. Scob's expressive performance speaks through the thick rubber mask which hides her facial features. EYES WITHOUT A FACE is not only significant for defining a whole new sub-genre in Horror, but it is also an all-around great film, and a timeless classic of world cinema.

Rating: 10/10.

Brain Dead (1990)

Bill Pullman stars as Dr. Rex Martin, a brilliant brain surgeon who is hired by the Eunice corporation to extract top-secret information from the mind of one of their most talented mathematicians. Martin's mental tampering takes him on a mind-bending journey that will call in to question his very own grasp on reality! BRAIN DEAD comes out of the Roger Corman school of filmmaking, featuring a clever screenplay by "Twilight Zone" writer Charles Beaumont. This low-budget brain teaser constantly pulls the rug out from beneath our feet as Martin's altered perceptions of reality begin to twist and turn. Bill Pullman takes us along for the ride as he slips into the mouth of madness, while Bill Paxton is delightfully devious as Eunice head Jim Reston. A crazed Bud Cort also appears as the paranoid Jack Halsey. Adam Simon carefully stages each scene to maintain the mystery as the multi-layered story unfolds. Fans of JACOB'S LADDER, ANGEL HEART, and OPEN YOUR EYES are sure to enjoy this early 90's gem!

Rating: 7/10.

'The Truck' Goes on a National Road Tour

Revs Up For National Release

NASHVILLE, TN - November 28, 2013 - Riley Hollow Films has released the second theatrical trailer and a new poster to coincide with the DVD release of their feature length road horror film “The Truck”. The Truck is the second feature length film written and directed by Lee Vervoort, following his breakthrough movie Gun Town. The new movie debuted recently at a gala premiere in Lafayette Kentucky where the movie was filmed, to rave reviews. Vervoort is taking the movie on the road, setting up screenings and special events in support of the independent film. Vervoort said of this unconventional approach "We plan to premier the film around the United States as much as we can by way of theater rental and other venues willing to show it. It's a good way to get the film seen in front of a variety of audiences in addition to conventions and such." Check out the new trailer for "The Truck" below:

The DVD is available now at Amazon along with 18x24 inch posters. It boasts several special features including a blooper reel, behind the scenes interviews with the cast & crew, and a full length audio commentary with writer/director Lee Vervoort and Director of Photography Jim Dougherty.

The Truck stars John Michael Morris as Roger Newman, and Rachelle Christine as Alice Mason. The movie also co-stars Jenna Nichole Ruiz playing a teenage hitch hiker, and re-teams Vervoort with members of his Gun Town cast, Tim Emery and Andy Grace. The film was shot in western Kentucky by cinematographer Jim Dougherty. The film was scored by Danny Lee Ramsey who also makes a special appearance in the film.

The Truck was Executive Produced by husband and wife team, Ronald Harry Dunn and Faith Diane Dunn. Vervoort shares producer credit with another husband & wife team Tim & Carole Emery of Copper Canyon Ranch L.L.C. Cameron McCasland serves as co-producer. Podcast Playlist: HMPOD.com #126

Mark and Jerry return to the HMPod.com Horror Movie Podcast with Episode #126, featuring Escape from Tomorrow, Paintball, Maniac, Adventures of Serial Buddies, Age of Dinosaurs!

The Happiest Movie on Earth!

¡Hola! Prepare yourselves for an all-new episode of The Horror Movie Show, hosted by those guys Jerry & Mark. This week the boys offer up opinions on a wide range of horrible movies.

The controversial Escape from Tomorrow is a new flick that was shot in California’s Disneyland & Florida’s Disney World, without consent of the Disney company. A weird tale of a family man’s mental breakdown (at least, that’s one interpretation), this black & white movie is a bit Goofy, a little Dopey, but definitely unique.

2009′s Paintball is the simple story of some friends who want to play at mock war & soon find themselves embroiled in the real thing. Maniac (2012) is a remake of an earlier horror movie shot from the point of view of the maniac himself. Starring the impish Elijah Wood, Frodo Baggins has never been naughtier.

The final two flicks reviewed are 2011 Adventures of Serial Buddies, about a pair of murderous misfits who become fast friends, and Age of Dinosaurs, a Jurassic Park wanna-be. All things considered, the filmmakers should have been devoured by a giant Tyrannosaur & saved everyone the trouble.

Mark and Jerry return to the HMPod.com Horror Movie Podcast with Episode #125, featuring The Conjuring; The Vanishing (’88 & ’93); Gangsters, Guns & Zombies; Zombie Hunter!

Quick! Phone Pope Francis for help!

Howdy-do folks. Prepare to listen to episode #125 of The Horror Movie Show on hmpod.com, hosted as ever by Mark & Jerry. This week’s show features a plethora of flicks guaranteed to make you quake with fear — or anger at the time wasted watching them.

The Conjuring is one of director James Wan’s latest features starring Patrick Wilson — also the star of Wan’s recent Insidious & its sequel. Supposedly based on a true incident, this tale of demonic haunting proves once again that the only true faith is the Roman Catholic faith. Also starring are Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor & the occasionally hilarious Ron Livingston.

There are two versions of The Vanishing: the original Dutch version from 1988 & the American remake in 1993. Is Kiefer Sutherland a bigger star than Netherlander Gene Bervoets? Well… yes. That doesn’t mean the remake is superior. Listen & hear the English-language opinions of our hosts.

2012′s Gangsters, Guns & Zombies features a no-name cast of crooks on the run after a murderous robbery in a world filling up with the hungry undead. And in keeping with the zombie theme, this episode ends with 2013′s Zombie Hunter. Has anyone else noticed that zombies are a big deal these days? Neither had we. Cheers!

'Coyote' Drags Home a Grisly New Clip

Arthouse Horror Flick
Releases Clip and Brings Home Awards

LOS ANGELES, CA - November 20, 2013 - Experience the new clip from an arthouse horror film that has been banned at several festivals and which has won awards at others, in its first public screenings: controversial director Trevor Juenger's Coyote. The film stars Bill Oberst Jr. as an insomniac writer whose sleep-deprived hallucinations distort reality as paranoia drives him to extreme violence. The surreal shocker, which mixes arthouse and horror, is shopping for distribution and its first public screenings have elicited strong reactions:

Director Trevor Juenger tweeted last week from a festival: "someone in the audience keeps yelling What Is This? and What Does It Mean? We're going to give him an aneurysm by film's end." Juenger says a college screening of Coyote was shut down in mid-film by an administrator citing "extreme violence," while another public screening in the director's hometown of St. Louis had to be cancelled when the theater owner refused to run the film due to "extreme content."

Coyote's IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2385041

Currently displaying 27 reviews, all positive. The film's wins include “Best Feature” at the 2013 Unreal Film Festival in Memphis and three Feature Film Awards at Pollygrind Underground Film Festival 2013 in Las Vegas, including a Best Actor Award for Oberst.

Fans of the surreal and the extreme can decide for themselves once Coyote gets distribution. In the meantime, here is a clip that director Juenger says "may be my favorite sequence in the film." It is the moment before Oberst's character snaps completely.

Director/writer: Trevor Juenger.

Cast: Bill Oberst Jr., Joe Hammerstone, Victoria Mullen and Bill Finkbinder.

Mark and Jerry return to the HMPod.com Horror Movie Podcast with Episode #124, featuring The Walking Dead, Dracula: The Dark Prince, Curse of Chucky, We Are What We Are!

Loverboy Dracula just can’t say no

Once again, dear listeners, hmpod.com is fairly pleased to bring you another episode of The Horror Movie Show, hosted by huge-headed heroes Jerry & Mark. And by “huge-headed” I refer to the sudden bout of water on the brain each has suffered. Perhaps it’s too many bad movies; perhaps it’s too many donuts. In any case, the guys discuss several movies & everyone’s favourite zombie TV series, The Walking Dead. As always, be on guard for walkers & spoilers.

Following The Walking Dead chat — up to & including the fourth episode of the third season — our critical thinkers attempt to drive a stake into the heart of Dracula: The Dark Prince. This 2013 feature attempts to spin itself off of Francis Ford Coppola‘s much-loved version of the bloodsucker legend. Keep your eyes peeled for the once might Jon Voight as Leonardo Van Helsing.

Next is the latest version of a much-loved horror series, 2013′s Curse of Chucky. All your favourites are back — and we do mean all. If you enjoy seeing & hearing a cute doll cuss like a rabid sailor, this movie may be just the ticket.

Putting a nice neat bow on this episode is a debate about the merits of 2013′s We Are What We Are, a U.S. remake of a recent Mexican horror flick. The plot: a rural family tries to keep up the arcane & unsavoury traditions of their bloodline. Maybe it’s time to leave the woods & go to Disneyland.

Till next week, friends, watch out for the hungry guy behind that tree….

Curse of Chucky (2013)

A series of strange accidents begin to occur after Nica receives an unmarked package in the mail containing an old Good Guys doll from the 80s. Nica soon begins to suspect that the doll is far less innocent than it appears as her friends and family are mercilessly killed around their old family estate. Chucky is back and deadlier than ever in the sixth installment of the series entitled CURSE OF CHUCKY, from CHILD'S PLAY creator Don Mancini. Mancini strips the film of the silly tone that had become increasingly apparent in the later sequels, and brings it back to a much darker and more sadistic place. The problem in this is that he dresses the sets in an almost Gothic aesthetic in an attempt to inject a sinister mood and atmosphere, where the killer doll, itself, should have been more than enough to elicit feelings of shock and terror. The film often suffers from an air of artifice as a result. That isn't to say that it is without its scares, however. CURSE OF CHUCKY does manage to develop a number of creepy moments, despite its rising body count and gory misgivings. It is also tastefully shot for what could easily have been just another cheap Slasher, which rightfully re-instills a sense of dignity that has been severely lacking in the other entries. The new doll design serves as another big win, as it moves away from the poor computerization that has plagued the series. Although we could really care less for the plot and characters, CURSE OF CHUCKY provides plenty of mean-spirited fun for fans of the series and newcomers, alike.

The Conjuring (2013)

The Perron family falls under attack by unseen forces after moving into an old farmhouse in the country, where they are forced to seek the aid of a pair of paranormal investigators in order to rid themselves of the malevolent spirits that have taken them hostage. Unlike in his previous pictures, director James Wan offers a far more reserved and effective haunting in THE CONJURING, where he actually manages to provide subtle scares that are built on tension and suspense rather than his signature shock tactics from before. It is also backed by solid performances from the entire cast that help to sell the realism and terror of the events as they unfold on screen. The house, itself, is dark, dingy, and filled with many secrets of its own, which sets the perfect mood and atmosphere for a haunting of its kind. THE CONJURING shows a remarkable improvement in style and storytelling for the growing director, and it is sure to send shivers down your spine with the lights turned low...

Monster in the Closet (1986)

A small town reporter teams with the local scientist to track the creature behind a mysterious set of murders in the 1986 cult-comedy, MONSTER IN THE CLOSET! Like STUDENT BODIES and SATURDAY THE 14TH before it, MONSTER IN THE CLOSET is another cheesy spoof that takes on the classic monster movies with plenty of bad puns and silly satire. Although it can be agonizing to watch at times, Dahlin's script sneaks in a few groan-worthy laughs, while the giant rubber monster actually manages to impress as it tears through the town. In addition to the early performances by Paul Walker and Fergie Duhamel, MONSTER IN THE CLOSET also includes a couple of clever cameos by genre greats John Carradine and Claude Akins. What little entertainment the film does manage to provide is hardly enough to warrant a recommendation.

Rating: 5/10.

Dark Feed (2013)

A mysterious substance infects the cast and crew of an independent Horror film, causing each of them to be driven insane with murderous rage in 2013's DARK FEED! Michael and Shawn Rasmussen piece together a dark and moody metafilm from the leftover limbs in this bloody slasher. Although it follows an all-too-familiar plotline, it travels at a brisk pace and remains visually-engaging from start to finish thanks to the Horror production that is going on in the background. The dark matter, itself, can't help but recall the evil substance contained within John Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS, while its effect on the unfortunate cast and crew members falls closer in line with PONTYPOOL and THE SIGNAL. DARK FEED falls back on competent performances from its relatively unknown cast, and stacks up a decent body count with plenty of gruesome murders along the way. What it lacks in originality, it at least makes up for in mindless murder, which slasher fans are sure to enjoy.

Mark and Jerry return to the HMPod.com Horror Movie Podcast with Episode #123, featuring The World’s End, The Wicker Man (’73 & ’06), Rapture-Palooza, The Hills Run Red!

Drinking for the end of the world

Hallo all! Welcome to Episode 123 of The Horror Movie Show on hmpod.com. Hopefully everyone survived Halloween & is now basking in the glow of pre-diabetic syndrome. Only one cure: More candy!!!

Your hosts, the lugubrious Jerry & Mark, begin the show with a lively discussion of British comedy-sci-fi weirdness The World’s End. This tale of a long-time loser determined to finish a legendary pub-crawl is the latest from Simon Pegg, the man behind Hot Fuzz & the fine Shaun of the Dead.

Next is a debate concerning the 1973 British horror classic The Wicker Man & its U.S.-focused remake from 2006. While no one could deny Nicolas Cage is a scenery-chewer of the highest calibre, it’s questionable whether he does a better job in the role so ably filled by Edward Woodward in the original.

2013′s Rapture-Palooza is yet another end-of-the-world comedy & frankly better than the recently reviewed This Is the End. Apart from the extremely similar theme of the two movies, comic actor Craig Robinson co-stars in both. How about that?

Finally, tipped off to The Hills Run Red in one of the millions of horror fan pages on Facebook, the guys discuss this violently low-budget flick. For all the deets, you only have to listen. Cheers.

When a pair of inept detectives (Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer) fails to solve the mystery, it falls to two seasoned exorcists dispatched by the Vatican (Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon). Main language in the movie is English. Some Turkish dialogs are also used in some scenes.

Also for the movie, a new custom language has created with a name “shadow-language”. One of the important points from the director’s view is to keep all scenes logical. Keep a good balance between creativity and realism. Reminiscence sometimes forces audince to think and find their own answers but always do this in a logical way.

There are worlds, there are humans and there are Others. But there is only one Time which is the border between worlds. What if time breaks down?

Slovakian physicist Michaela (Miska), discovers a new fact on magnetic fields and time-breaks, after her long reserches. According to her calculations she found that every six years, intersections in the planets’s coordinates, causes temporaliy gravity fields in the solar system. These gravity fields breaks the time for a very short period and can make a gateway to a black-hole. The estimated coordinates of one of these gravity fields that will occur on the earth, will take place in a town called Çeşme in Turkey. To examine this event, Michaela and her boy friend took a trip from Slovakia to Çeşme. What they will face, is much more then what they expected.

Peter Straub Returns to the Screen in New Film

Acclaimed Author Peter Straub to Receive
A New Screen Adaptation of

Care of Clay Stafford, American Blackguard Entertainment, and Jazz Maker Films

LOS ANGELES, CA - November 2, 2013 - Not since 1981’s Ghost Story with Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and Patricia Neal has critically acclaimed author Peter Straub seen his work on the big screen. This won’t be the case for long. Clay Stafford – through his companies American Blackguard Entertainment and Jazz Maker Films – has optioned the Straub-penned book “Pork Pie Hat.”

“Pork Pie Hat” is the story of the fictional jazz legend of the same name. Hat has never disclosed the unthinkable event he witnessed near the forbidden woods known as The Backs, even though the events of that Halloween night have tormented him since childhood. As Hat is sick now and nearing the end of a long slide through the depths of alcoholism and depression, the time has come for him to reveal what he saw and, more importantly, what he did.

Peter Straub is the New York Times bestselling author of seventeen novels, which have been translated into more than twenty languages. They include Ghost Story, Koko, Mr. X, In the Night Room, and two collaborations with Stephen King, The Talisman and Black House. He has written two volumes of poetry and two collections of short fiction, and he edited the Library of America’s edition of H.P. Lovecraft’s Tales. He has won the British Fantasy Award, seven Bram Stoker Awards, two International Horror Guild Awards, and two World Fantasy Awards. In 1998, he was named Grand Master at the World Horror Convention. In 2006, he was given the HWA’s Lifetime Achievement Award and was Killer Nashville’s 2011 Guest of Honor.

Clay Stafford is an award-winning and bestselling author, screenwriter, filmmaker, and songwriter. He has sold over 1.5 million hardcover copies of his children’s adaptations and has seen his film work distributed internationally in over fourteen languages. He has reviewed books, plays, and films and writes near-daily book reviews for Killer Nashville’s Featured Book of the Day. Some of Stafford’s projects also include the feature-length documentary, “One Of The Miracles: The Inge Meyring Smith Story,” and the music CD, “XO,” with fellow mystery writer Jeffery Deaver. Previously associated with Universal Studios and PBS, he is currently President / CEO of American Blackguard, an entertainment company in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I’ve long been a fan of Peter Straub,” says Clay Stafford. “He’s one of the best writers I know and certainly one of the most critically acclaimed. It’s been way overdue since someone told Peter’s stories on film. We’re about to change that.”

I Am ZoZo (2012)

This is easily the worst film I have seen all year, even worse than the shitstorm that is ABERRATION. It is painstakingly boring with no suspense and absolutely no payoff of any kind. For the uninitiated, ZoZo is a supposed deity that has frequently been encountered during spirit board sessions around the world over the centuries. Those who communicate with ZoZo are said to experience terrible events or even demonic possession following their encounters. I AM ZOZO attempts to fictionalize one such case, in only the most mundane ways imaginable. We are first introduced to a group of unlikeable teens led by the idiotic Mel, who refuses to stop playing with the stupid Ouija board even after she repeatedly encounters hostile spirits. The acting is atrocious, and the editing for the Super 8 film stock is even worse, with dialog overlapping cuts and leading to questionable jumps in continuity. ZoZo's powers of possession amount to briefly holding one of the characters down on the bed, and causing Mel to use her inhaler. Then it's over. Although Tess is shown to have become possessed by the demon in the very beginning of the film, we are never shown how this truly takes effect. Writer/Director Scott Di Lalla only demonstrates his complete lack of talent as a filmmaker from start to finish. I AM ZOZO is a pathetic excuse for a film, I regret wasting my time seeing it through to completion, and I apologize to anyone who wasted their time reading this review. Look elsewhere.

Rating: 2/10.
