Highland Film Group to Handle International Sales Beginning at EFM

LOS ANGELES, CA - January 30, 2014 - Atlas Independent, the affiliate company of Charles Roven’s Atlas Entertainment, announced today that they will produce SANCTUARY, which will be directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego (APOLLO 18, OPEN GRAVE), from a script written by Ryne Douglas Pearson (KNOWING). William Green and Aaron Ginsburg will produce for Atlas Independent. Atlas Entertainment’s Richard Suckle, Unbroken Pictures’ Bryan Bertino (THE STRANGERS) and Adrienne Biddle will executive produce. Highland Film Group (HFG) will handle worldwide sales and will introduce the film to international buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

SANCTUARY follows three documentarians who travel to South America to investigate a town which mysteriously disappeared from the map. The trio are led to the ultimate enigma after a series of misfortunate occurrences: an immense concrete structure located in the middle of the missing town, with no entrances or exits.

“We intend to make a commercial horror film with one of the leading directors of the genre at the helm," said Atlas Independent’s William Green and Aaron Ginsburg. This will be the third collaboration between Atlas Independent and Gonzalo following OPEN GRAVE and THE MAN ON CARRION ROAD, which will begin production in April.

Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego is represented by WME, Atlas Entertainment, and attorney Carlos Goodman.

The Invoking (2013)

Samantha returns to her newly-inherited home with three of her friends to inspect the property, where they soon discovers a number of horrifying secrets about her family's dark past. What do you want me to say here, really? The only thing that director Jeremy Berg manages to invoke is complete and utter boredom. Quite frankly, I'm tired of wasting what little free time I have left patronizing poorly made films. THE INVOKING, which was clearly retitled from SADER RIDGE to capitalize on THE CONJURING, is $11,000 of wasted money and 82-minutes of wasted time. I was truly terrified that I was going to wake back up after the first half-hour to be subjected to more bad storytelling and unconvincing characters. The sense of realism is uncanny. You truly get the feeling that you are traveling with a group of inexperienced actors as they babble on incessantly about only the most uninteresting topics imaginable. We are beat down by bad acting for what feels like an eternity before the first action beat, which is so cliche and predictable that I should have removed the DVD from the player immediately and destroyed it out of principle. There is no suspense to be found anywhere amidst this muddled mystery, only pain and misery.

Rating: 3/10.

There’s plenty of exposed teen viscera (and breasts!) and love triumphing over prejudice. Just like The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and “Glee” – only 100% Troma style!

'In Fear' Bows March 11th on Blu-ray and DVD!

“If you like edge-of-your-seat thrillers,
this is one ride you’re going to want to take”
- DreadCentral

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - January 30, 2014 - Having already conquered the Sundance Film Festival, In Fear, the critically acclaimed feature film debut of writer/director Jeremy Lovering, arrives March 11th on Blu-ray™, VOD and DVD from Anchor Bay Films. In Fear will also enjoy several U.S. exclusive theatrical engagements starting Friday, March 7th. SRP is $29.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $24.98 for the DVD, with pre-book on February 12th.

Starring Iain De Caestecker (ABC’s hit series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures) and Allen Leech (“Downton Abbey”), In Fear has taken the horror world by storm, garnering rave reviews wherever it is played. The film stunned audiences in international film festivals in nine countries, including Canada’s Toronto After Dark, Germany’s Rosebud Entertainment Fantasy Festival, Spain’s Fancine – Festival de Cine Fantastico and South Korea’s Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival.

In Fear is a tense psychological horror about a young couple's fight to make it through the night. Home invasion but in a car. In real-time. Tom (De Caestecker) and Lucy (Englert) are trapped in a maze of country roads with only their vehicle for protection, terrorized by an unseen tormentor hell-bent on exploiting their worst fears. Driving, lost and tormented in the night, primal fears of the dark and the unknown give way to fear that you have let the evil in, or that it is already there.

JoBlo called In Fear “…a great film to watch curled up with a date on a dark and stormy night,” while Screen Daily hailed it as “an old-fashioned white-knuckle horror thriller.” TotalFilm gave the film 4 stars with “shredded-nerve performances,” and Arrow In The Head warning viewers that “you won’t be eager to go on any road trips soon after.”

Scorned (2013)

In the classic tradition of BASIC INSTINCT and FATAL ATTRACTION comes SCORNED, a sexy new thriller starring AnnaLynne McCord and Billy Zane. Kevin awakens to find his girlfriend, Sadie, going through his cell phone to find a number of incriminating text messages to another woman: Sadie's best friend. He also finds that he's been hit on the head and tied to a chair, and that the romantic weekend that he has planned for both ladies is about to go to hell! AnnaLynne McCord delivers another highly entertaining performance as Sadie, who revels in satisfaction over the tortures she has planned. Several sadistic scenes from the aforementioned films have been paraphrased here, including Sadie's attempt to make a microwave meal out of her best friend's dog, and a gut-wrenching homage to MISERY with a hilarious twist. Billy Zane is equally enjoyable as Kevin, a man who is so smug and self-assured that he is willing to call Sadie's bluff even as she threatens him with unthinkable crimes. While SCORNED strings together a number of contrived and highly unlikely scenarios, it still makes for a ton of bloody fun with its sick and twisted sense of humor!

Rating: 7/10.

Director McClure and writer Ryan Finnerty are quoted on the film's IMDb page as saying that the film's most disturbing scenes were not in the original screenplay: "We threw most of the script out the window once we got to the desert and rewrote scenes based on the actual personalities of our actors. If it feels real, that may be why." Children Of Sorrow will screen in November at Europe's largest horror con, The Weekend Of Horrors in Germany. Here, Oberst will be a celebrity guest.

New Trailer is 'Escaping the Dead'!

Prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse in

Coming Soon From Danish Director Martin Sonntag

LOS ANGELES, CA - January 24, 2014 - "Escaping the Dead" is inspired by a series of articles about the deathdrug "Krokodil" that was published about the same period of time when Ronald Poppo had his face eaten by a naked man hooked on bathsalt in Miami. It is the perfect zombie plot: a deathdrug that turns people into zombies. Click through to watch the new trailer!

The film has its starting point in a typical day for the lead character, David. David is the local marihuana pusher, but he is the kind of dealer that smokes more than he sells. In the meantime the country has been hit by a new deathdrug and when David and his partner in crime Ahmir is offered some exceptionally cheap cocaine they see it as an opportunity to earn big money at the big techno concert the following Friday, but the cocaine turns out to have a terrible side effect that creates a giant zombie outbreak that spreads across the entire Copenhagen. In the film we follow David and his bloody fight out of the city.

Directed by Martin Sonntag and Bastian Brinch Pedersen, the film stars Bastian Brinch Pedersen (who is also the co-director and producer of the film) as David, Rama Øzel as Ahmir, along with Daniel Hutera, Ali Öezkan, Iben Ma Bønnelycke, Nicolai Huan Nguyen, Camilla Ludvigsen and Kim Sønderholm ("Blood Fare", "The Winedancers", "Sinister Visions") playing Lars the policeman.

'The Divine Tragedies' Enter Production This February

Writer and director Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House) announces his next film,
the serial killer mind-bender: The Divine Tragedies!

LOS ANGELES, CA - January 24, 2014 - Based loosely on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case of 1924, it tells the tale of Charles Brubaker (played by Graham Denman, The Haunting of Whaley House) and his half-brother Thomas Lo Bianco (played by Jon Kondelik, Airplane Vs. Volcano), who concoct a deadly game to test their superior intelligence against the dimwitted masses. This game will eventually lead to murder, and when Genevieve, a beautiful single mother, enters their lives they finally find the perfect girl for their first kill. But, problems arise when they quickly discover that Detective Homer Gaul, a cop with a very special gift, is hot on their trail.

"It's a serial killer film, but unlike anything you've ever seen before," says director Prendes. "I know people always say that, but I really think the film will back me up. It's American Psycho meets Videodrome, by way of John Carpenter. I wanted to make something that would really surprise people. Not just in a gory way, which is easy, but in a beautiful way. The same way a David Lynch movie can be beautiful and surprising."

The film is being produced by Jon Kondelik & James Kondelik, under their production company Dual Visions. The Divine Tragedies is the company's first of many feature films to come.

"Dual Visions aims to produce feature films that engage an audience with unique experiences," say the Kondelik Brothers. "People won't be able to forget the things they've seen after watching this film."

Filming for The Divine Tragedies will begin at the end of February.

Casting: TBA.

It all started with a text…
The Fury Unfurls On Blu-ray™, DVD and VOD February 4, 2014

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - January 22, 2014 - William Congreve once wrote: “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” Bill, hang on to your plume because you’re about to meet Sadie… On February 4, 2014, Anchor Bay Films releases Scorned, a story guaranteed to make any man eternally faithful! Directed by Mark Jones, director and writer of the cult favorite Leprechaun series, Scorned will be available for an SRP of $29.99 for the Blu-ray™ and $24.98 for the DVD. Pre-book is January 8, 2014. It will be available On Demand across select cable providers and for digital download across iTunes, Xbox and VUDU.

Sadie (AnnaLynne McCord, 2nd Place, Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Actress: Excision) and Kevin (Billy Zane, Electrick Children, Titanic, Dead Calm) have decided to spend a romantic weekend together at his lake house. But when an unexpected – and unfortunate – text from her best friend Jennifer (Viva Bianca, “Spartacus: War of the Damned”) to Kevin reveals a lurid love affair between the two, Sadie spirals into a hunger for revenge that is without mercy.

Come Out and Play (2012)

A vacationing couple discovers that their remote island getaway has been overrun by a clan of killer children in the terrifying survival film, COME OUT AND PLAY, from 2012. Although it is an alleged adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Juan José Plans, COME OUT AND PLAY is really a shot-for-shot remake of the original Spanish version entitled WHO CAN KILL A CHILD? from Narciso Ibáñez Serrador. That hardly serves as a discredit to writer/director Makinov, however, since COME OUT AND PLAY is just as frightfully effective as its predecessor. Supposedly, the mysterious Makinov spent the entire production concealed behind a mask, and is claimed to have directed from within an empty ice chest in one of many stunts performed behind the scenes. Regardless, he has still managed to bring out the utter sense of hopelessness and dread that overcomes our two unfortunate travellers. Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Vinessa Shaw deliver gut-wrenching performances as they struggle to survive, alone and outnumbered on a deserted island with no chance for escape. The empty city streets give an increased sense of foreboding, as well, leading up to the first shocking moment where our characters uncover the truth behind the disappearances. COME OUT AND PLAY is just as brutal, violent, and sensational as the Spanish original, and a strong entry into survivalist horror.

The Vampire Lovers (1970)

THE VAMPIRE LOVERS is the first in a series of three vampire films to feature Hammer's Karnstein family. This tale follows the beautiful Carmilla Karnstein as she seduces the daughters of several of the town's nobility before draining them of their lives. The sexually charged story is filled with tight corsets, buxom beauties, and even a few bloody decapitations for good measure. Ingrid Pitt is electrifying as the sexy vampiress, attaching a sense of sadness and loneliness to an otherwise sensual performance. LOVERS offers a brilliant opening where a shrouded figure rises out of the mist and dances in the moonlight in what might be one of Hammer's most visually striking sequences. Although this first breathtaking moment is dripping with mood and atmosphere, it is never matched throughout the remainder of the film. The Karnstein trilogy came as a direct response to the erotic Horror trend that was being produced out of both Spain and France, and mark a decisive turn in the direction of the Hammer films of the time where soft-core imagery and explicit gore quickly began replacing many of the stronger story elements and characters. Baker does introduce more class and finesse to this offering than Jess Franco ever instilled in any of his Spanish releases, but the film lacks the surreal qualities that made Jean Rollin's vampire efforts more alluring.

Rating: 7/10.

The Bay (2012)

Ecological horror takes a terrifying new turn in THE BAY, from 2012. A sudden disease overtakes the coastal communities surrounding Chesapeake Bay, causing mass hysteria and bloody carnage as the unsuspecting citizens begin dying from a number of unexplained causes. While many people may say that the "found-footage" film has been overplayed, director Barry Levinson and the crew behind THE BAY demonstrate that this format can still have an immediate and lasting effect when handled properly. THE BAY is narrated by Donna, a young news reporter on her first assignment. Donna is one of the few witnesses to escape the tragedy, and she has made it her mission to expose the government coverup surrounding the deadly epidemic by making her videos public for the first time. Unfortunately, Kether Donohue is one of the weaker elements in the film, as her cutaways repeatedly distract from the events on screen and excuse away the need for narration. What we are left with, however, are a number of incredibly impressive special effects that are caught on camera. The uncovered video footage finds countless victims having their flesh stripped from their bodies right before our very eyes. The varying vantage points also serve to expand the scope of the picture dramatically. There is an immediate sense of urgency and true horror as the disease spreads, which is made nonetheless frightening by the root cause in the film: Pollution. THE BAY is utterly believable, and should serve as a shocking reminder that Mother Nature always has a destructive means of defending herself.

Rating: 8/10.

'Fractional' Makes Its Debut on DVD!

Now Available on DVD and Available January 26th On Demand

LOS ANGELES, CA - January 20, 2014 - Tied to a chair, alone, cold and without food or water, psychiatrist John Hatchett awakens in an abandoned warehouse.  John’s only weapons are his mind and he must use them to full effect to outwit, David Crowe, a man who is not of sound mind and claims to be a former patient… John has a past that he wishes to remain a secret... A secret David Crowe is willing to do anything to reveal...

Fractional is the award winning twisted creation of Writer/Director Malcolm Deegan. Fractional came to light when another project that Totality Pictures were producing called 'Compromised' fell through at the final stage before principle photography.

Wanting to create a claustrophobic murky setting, writer/Director Malcolm Deegan set about writing the story for 'Fractional'. With a wealth of story elements to choose from after a lengthy period including a series of disturbing scenes in a fictitious mental institute called 'Ivory Pines'. Most of which had to be discarded because of budgetary constraints.

'Frational' is a hybrid movie with multiple levels which covers a twisted, dark subject matter with a villain at its core who uses his mind as much as brawn. The cat and mouse that ensues ends in a shattering climax.

Available on DVD now through and rent or buy on Amazon instant (January 26th) Also available to rent or buy through Distrify and VHX:

Dead Sushi (2012)

Tokyo extreme cinema has reached a new level of absurdity in 2012's cult comedy, DEAD SUSHI! Our story begins with Keiko, an aspiring sushi chef who runs into trouble when the wrong customers step into her shop. In addition to their sleazy boss, the seedy pharmaceutical company brings along an unexpected guest in the form of a pissed off ex-employee who has just used his secret formula to transform their cold fish into living weapons! Unlike many of the other outrageous and over-the-top Horror films from Japan, DEAD SUSHI is actually built on an entertaining and somewhat intelligent script. It only relies on the moments of extreme gore to accentuate the madness on screen. Rina Takeda is quite enjoyable as our unlucky sushi chef, while the rest of the cast play perfectly into their campy characters. With equal parts action, comedy, and horror, DEAD SUSHI makes for plenty of mindless escapism.

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (2010)

It's time to break out the Hypnocil, because after this documentary, you will never sleep again! NEVER SLEEP AGAIN: THE ELM STREET LEGACY is the definitive documentary on the Nightmare on Elm Street series, diving deeper into the films than ever before. Where THE NIGHTMARE SERIES ENCYCLOPEDIA that accompanied the original DVD Box Set provided plenty of great interviews and behind the scenes stories, it can hardly compete with the incredible amount of information that is put on display in this four-hour film. Each new segment opens with a brilliant and bloody homage care of Michael Granberry's ghoulish claymation. Directors Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch then tackle each film in loving detail, working off of a script by Thommy Hutson (HIS NAME WAS JASON, MORE BRAINS!). The amount of interviews included here are simply astounding, bringing together more cast and crew members than we have seen in nearly any other Horror documentary. From the series directors like Wes Craven, Jack Sholder, Rachel Talalay, and Chuck Russell, to the seemingly endless number of actors like Mark Patton, John Saxon, Amanda Wyss, Lisa Wilcox, Jennifer Rubin, and Heather Langenkamp, everyone that has ever been involved in the Nightmare Series can be found in some form on screen. And what would A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET documentary be without the great Robert Englund, of course? Beyond just the standard stories, Englund, Craven, and the others explore the psychological aspects that are at work in the series, while Jack Sholder and writer David Chaskin finally get to explain away the questionable subtext in FREDDY'S REVENGE. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET fans will never find a more complete or loving tribute to their favorite Horror series.

Rating: 10/10.
