Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau (2015)

The infamous production of Richard Stanley's THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU was not unlike H.G. Wells' classic novel, itself. What began as a beautiful and idealistic dream quickly dissolved into a hellish nightmare. LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY'S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU recounts this harrowing ordeal from its earliest conceptions through interviews with many of the key players, including the elusive Richard Stanley, himself. Stanley, a brilliant but equally odd and eccentric character, describes his lifelong ambitions leading up to the making of the film, before delving into the depressing politics and on-set developments that led to the complete and utter destruction of both his personal vision and his career. While similar stories may not seem uncommon in the movie industry, the unique circumstances and unruly actors that contributed to this failure are quite unlike anything we've heard before. Black magic, ritualism, suicide, sex, drugs, and sabotage are just a few of the shocking details that are brought to light throughout the course of the film, let alone the egotism and power plays that went on between stars Marlon Brando, Val Kilmer, and the relatively young and inexperienced director. The documentary offers a strongly-composed narrative and keen editing from fellow Horror filmmaker David Gregory, and provides a rounded and relatively unbiased look at the disaster from all angles. No matter how you look at it, the end results of the events portrayed in LOST SOUL are a sad indictment of the Hollywood machine at its worst, but the story behind the film, itself, is sure to leave audiences enraptured in its mystery and intrigue.

Rating: 7/10.
